About the country

Location of the place

I was in Germany. So not far from Czech Republic. And I didn't see really big difference between those countries and between people too :) My neighbors in my first days taught me how I can ask in German language: Where can I buy the best beer? And from that moment I realized that Germany is a cool country and I will like my internship.

City

I was in a small, fairytail city - Detmold. This is a very cute city with low houses and lots of trees. In the city center is quite noisy and people often play the piano for free. But if you like silence, you can retire in parks and just enjoy the beauty.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

I was in Munich on the IAESTE weekend and one weekend in Berlin.

So about Munich... I'm really happy, that I had a chance to be on this event.
My adventures started in the city Detmold - where I'm living now. With my friends we decided to go to this weekend by car and invited the other inters in our city with us. We sang all the way in the car and enjoyed our time together. On Saturday morning I attended the bankruptcy competition, in which I had to run around the city and did some funny and unusual things like swimming in the fountain. After a competition, I went to BMW museum and I was really surprised about the development history of this company. In the evening I was in a huge party from IAESTE Munich with free alcohol, where I chatted and danced with the other interns all night.
If you will have the opportunity to go on a IAESTE weekend, do it!

Employer

I worked in the Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe Architecture university. This is one of two universities, which located in Detmold. Most of the students at my university study architecture, but there were also students from the interior design program. I really like that students from this university have access to a special room with different materials, which they could take and make everything they want.

Work description

I worked in Revit on the one project with usual students, we made a tent. But most of the time I was doing research on a single instrument that my teacher invented. It was the device that changed the music depending on the space in which it was located, temperature and light. So I tryed to make grafic pictures from numbers, which I received from the device.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

750 euro. You can live in Detmold on this salary, but you haven't got so much possibilities for travelling. On this salary I had a lunch at the university, a good dinner at my flat and I drank beer in the evenings. But as for public transport, it was expensive to go anywhere.

Language requirements

German people have very good level of English. My boss at work spoke an English much better than me, but it didn't interfere on our good communication. The students, with whom I lived in the apartment, spoke on the same level as me (on the average level).

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

290 euro, IAESTE Germany. The sad thing is, that it was a little bit less than half of my salary. But I lived with the 5 fantastic people, they were extremely super. All of them are students in the architectural university where I worked. We went to work together almost every day, and in the evening they were waiting for me at home. Sometimes they cooked dinners for all people in our apartment. It was very cute and food was extra delicious.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I met only a few IAESTE members in Germany. That was when I went on a weekend trip to Munich, and IAESTE organized this event for us. Detmold is too small city, so they don't have their own IAESTE. And I arrived to Detmold on my friends car, so I don't need anything from IAESTE.

Meeting other foreign students

I met 14 another foreign students, we spent together so much time. We were in different concerts in the Detmold and we made closed party in our houses. These guys came from Argentina, Brazil, Nepal, Ganna, Russia, Israel and ect. I hope that we will continue to communicate and will visit each other.

Sport and culture

Detmold is a very beautiful place. Many people running in the morning and enjoying the surrounding nature. Everywhere are bike paths. I ride on my roller skates with my flatmates sometimes, it was really nice. Also in Detmold you can see three museums: historical, village-museum (old historical park) and museum, in which you can see, how people make a beer.

Food, local specialties

BEEEEEEEER!

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

I think I can communicate with them, but I didn't need it. My internship was excellent!

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Don't afraid to speak with people, they are nice and always tried to help you :)
So only enjoy your time!

What not to forget with you

May be you should take different types of clothes. Almost all summer was very hot, but in the end of August we sometimes had rain and became very cold. So don't forget the umbrella and jacket.
Personal towel and pillow. Something like shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste - you can always buy cheaply in Germany.
Every alkohol, which you can take (they like Becherovka so much) :)

Benefits of the internship

I met a lot of people from different countries. I learned many interesting historical facts and information about the cultures of other interns. I started to speak English better and stopped being afraid to say something wrong :)
And at university I learned to look at architecture from the other side.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

When I asked about the place where I was going to live or about my future university, IAESTE responded to messages very quickly. When I arrived in Detmold, I don't need any help from a IAESTE :)

Overall experience with IAESTE

I love those guys! But I knew members of the IAESTE, which are from Czech Republic, and I think that they do their job super :) So i like IAESTE!
