About the country

Location of the place

The capital of Austria is located in the northeast of the country, in Central Europe

City

Vienna is the capital and the biggest austrian city with a population about 1.8 million. It's a very dynamic, modern and open city with a perfect public transport system. City biking is a part of everyday life there. The old part (1st district) of Vienna offers many monuments, interesting museums, restaurants but also beautiful parks where you can have a picnic. For roller coast lovers there is the Prater. I recommend swimming in the Danube river in summer, it is quite clean and very refreshing.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

"Austria offers beautiful mountains, natural parks, amazing lakes, so it's a paradise especially for hiking lovers . You should visit Salzburg or St.Wolfgangsee (but it's quite pricey). There are Westbahn trains going between Vienna and Salzburg, which are much cheaper and very comfortable. For those who are planning few out-of-Vienna trips there is a Summer ticket valid for all the OBB trains during whole summer (I didn't buy it but it pays off after 2 trips).
For one-day trip in Vienna you can climb up the Kahlenberg hill and enjoy the view (there is also a bus going up there).
Adventurous people can go by bike to Bratislava (or you can just take a bus or train to get there).
There are also many IAESTE weekends organised in neighboring countries so you can go to Germany, Hungary, Slovenia or Slovakia.. "

Employer

Employer

Lallemand - a privately-held Canadian company founded in Montreal. The company specializes in the development, production, and marketing of yeasts and bacteria. It is world-wide spread and it has offices in 40 countries. The Vienna plant is located in Ottakringer, right next to a brewery.

Work description

I worked in a chemical laboratory of quality. We were always more interns there, so we shared work. Our task was to analyze samples of different kinds of yeasts (analytical chemistry mostly - protein, phosporus and dry matter content, microscopy, dough growing power of yeasts). The work was not too demanding, but all the colleagues and supervisors were very nice to me and and also very helpful in case I needed anything.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

1260 EUR/month, more than sufficient

Language requirements

English - very good / German - good (I had no knowledge of German and everything was fine, everyone speaks English very well)

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

550 EUR for 6 weeks in a private room in a shared flat, I found it by myself via Airbnb.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

"I was picked up at the train station by an IAESTE member and she took me to my flat. The first working day another IAESTE member accompanied me to work and helped me with a Meldezettel (neccessary registration in Vienna).
During the whole stay there were many events organised by IAESTE and I joined most of them. Everyone was super nice and really helpful, thanks!"

Meeting other foreign students

I arrived at the same time as most of trainees, there were maybe 30 of us in Vienna from both BOKU and Vienna LC. We met first during Iaeste events and then we spent a lot of time together after work just hanging out/trips/beer/swimming.

Sport and culture

Vienna is perfect for biking along the Danube or the Donaukanal. You can go swimming to a public or private beach. There are also few parks where you can go jogging (Prater, or along the Donaukanal). There are many cultural events such as music festivals or you can visit many museums, cinemas, theaters.

Food, local specialties

You definitely need to try a famous Wiener Schnitzel, Marillenknödels, Sachercake or Mozartkugeln. Otherwise, austrian cuisine is very similar to the czech one and the supermarket prices are also very similar. Of course, eating out is much more expensive (approximately 10EUR for a meal in a restaurant, 4 - 5.5 EUR for a beer).

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Very easy, thanks to the same tariff prices, plus Internet, Skype

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Enjoy Vienna, the city has an amazing atmosphere.

What not to forget with you

ISIC card (to get student discounts, even though it is not a big reduction usually), swimming suit, if you have the possibility take a bike with you

Benefits of the internship

I experienced working in a different environment, improved my English, met amazing people.. Everything was perfect, so go!

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Without any problems:)

Overall experience with IAESTE

Perfect, I can highly recommend it!
