About the country

Location of the place

Slovenia is a very small but also very beautiful country. Did you know that it looks like a chicken? Check the map. :) In a short distance, you can visit vineyards around Maribor, seaside, capital city Ljubljana or regions with mountains. Everything is close.

City

Ljubljana is a capital city situated in the middle of Slovenia. This city has just around 400 000 inhabitants so it's not that crowded like we could expect from the capital city. The dominant is the Ljubljana castle situated on the hill right in the city center. There is a very beautiful view to the whole city with mountains behind. The city center at all is a very nice place for hanging out and walking. Especially at night has a magical atmosphere thanks to pubs, bars and restaurants which are located close to river Ljubljanica. Also the Tivoli park is a very beautiful place. People are walking, jogging and hanging out there. What I really liked on Ljubljana was a renting of bikes. There are many stations with bikes. All you need is just 3 euro for registration per year and then you can ride like you want. Perfect right? Generally Slovenia is very eco-friendly country.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

What would I recommend you are firstly Ljubljana and Maribor, the biggest cities and close to Maribor also vineyards and wine tasting. Seaside is nice for swimming and visiting the cities there (Piran, Portorož, Koper, Izola). On the way to the seaside you can stop to see Predjama castle and Skocjan caves and the original Lipizzan horses in Lipica. What you can't forget are two biggest lakes Bled and Bohinj. There are also smaller ones: Jasna, Zelenci, Krida and in the moutains The valley of the 7 lakes. But watch out Jasna is pretty cold, has just 5-6 degrees celsius. I was very surprised by waterfall Peričnik, finally some where I can go behind. For a nice walk you can go to Blejski Vintgar close to the Bled lake. For adrenaline fanatics like I am, there is heaven called Bovec where can you do water sports (kayaking, rafting, swimming etc.) in Soča river and canyoning (absolutely cool). The highlight for me was hiking to Triglav. Difficult but incredible! Definitely worth it.

Employer

Employer

I worked in Kemisjki Inštitut on nuclear magnetic resonance. My boss and people around me were very friendly and helpful. It was a nice atmosphere there.

Work description

My task was to work on nuclear magnetic resonance, firstly I had to study a lot about NMR and I did many practices. Then I got a real project which was a structure assignment of the drug DN-10 by NMR and the second one was an assignment of 3D structure of DNA. I learned a lot of new things during this internship.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

My salary was 450 euros per month. It was sufficient for living there but for traveling I needed more money.

Language requirements

During my internship I was using English and sometimes Czech for just to try if Slovenian people can understand me :D On the beginning my English wasn't very good but I improved it very quickly so don't worry if you are a little bit afraid of your languages skills.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

The accommodation was provided by IAESTE in Student dormitory Rožna Dolina. I had a nice room with one roommate. Kitchen and bathroom were shared. You can find some equipment in the kitchen but better to have your own.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

On the bus station I was pick up by one IAESTE member and he helped me with all papers and things on the beginning. Once per week we did a beer meeting in some pub with IAESTE members and other trainees. Also we did some small trips. Very amazing was an event called Slovenian weekend organized by IAESTE located in Bovec.

Meeting other foreign students

With other IAESTE trainees we did trips around Slovenia and I also met some erasmus people there, because they lived in the same house of the dormitory. So it's easy to be in touch with other foreign students.

Sport and culture

It's very nice to go running to Tivoli, on the top there is a place for workout so you can also do some exercise there. Right in the dormitory area you'll find a field for volleyball, basketball or football. It's also very easy to rent a bike in Ljubljana. Slovenia is amazing place for hiking and water sports on Soča river.

Food, local specialties

Food in Slovenia isn't very different compare to Czech Republic but don't forget to try specialties like Blejska kremšnita, Prekmurska gibanica, Štrukli, Kranjska klobasa and more :)

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Internet :)

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

If you'll have opportunity to go to Slovenia, just go! It definitely worh it.

What not to forget with you

Don't forget your hiking shoes ♥ (if you are same mountains lover), stuff for cooking, favourite book.

Benefits of the internship

Experience in your field of study, new friends, discovering to new places, local traditions and unforgettable memories :)

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Most of the members were on holidays, but all the time there was someone to take care of us.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Awesome of course :D
