About the country

Location of the place

Almaty is the biggest city in the middle Asia. It's close to the borders with Kyrgystan and Uzbekistan. Very close to the city is ski resort and beuatiful mountain area for trips.

City

Almaty is big city with developed industry and various culture live for everyone. The public transport it's easy to use for everyday transport. You can find there almost everything that you need in big city.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Very close is a mountain resort (shymbulak), where you can go to many hiking trips, you can get to Mendeu by bus from the city ( 30minutes). For another trips you have to travel a bit far, but you can use cheap train or bus public/private transport to get where you need.

Employer

Al-Faraby Kazakh National University is big university with beuatiful capus, where are situated most of the faculties, dormitory for foreign students, library and small student center Keremet with canteen, laundry, cinema, ...
The comunication with KazNU was fasst and with no problem.

Work description

I was working in the Institute of Combustion problems, which was part of KazNU. My research project was "Carbonization of rise husk, physical and chemical actiovation os RS and it's use for water treatment".

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

I earned 40 000 KZT tenge for months, as was in the aplication. These money i used mostly for eating in the restaurants, because we had no equipment in the kitchen in the dormitory. For locals it was normal salary for part time job.

Language requirements

Russian is really needed, if you want to comunicate with locas, for example in the shops, restaurants, public transport, ...
At the univeristy you can speak english with people, but not everybody is fluent in English. Russian is better for you solve any problems or just order food in the restaurants.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

For me the accomondation was arranged by the university and it was cover by them. I was living at the student's housein the campus.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

At the airport i was picked up by employe from the KazNU. For every weekends we got proposals for trips from local IAESTE and for every trips the IAESTE arrangde one local student who went with us, because the guider spoke only in Russian or Kazakh.

We meet almost every day with others interns, but it's was

Sport and culture

We went twice to watch footbal matchof local footbal team in the big stadium. Few times we played footbal at the small footbal stadium next to the student's house at the campus. We havevisited some night clubs and bars, but it was our own activity without local IAESTE members.

Food, local specialties

Typical food is everytime with meat, so Kazakhstan deosn't suit to vegeterian. But in every menu is always at least one salad.
Typical Kazadh meal is lamb shashlik od Bishparmak - horse meat with noodles.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

I used to communicate with my family ineternet application WhatsApp. The data service is realy cheap in Kazakhstan, i paid about 2000 tenge( 5 EURO) for month tarif with 4 giga data. Only complicated think is, that i have to bought kazakh simcard, but local students helped me to arrange it.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Learn some basic of Russian, but as a Slavic nation, you understand a bit :) Donť be afraid fo locals, they're really friendly and helpful.
Download 2gis mobile app, its very helpful.

What not to forget with you

Don't forget hiking shoes, they are needed for trips to the mountains and it's more comfortable with them for you! Suncream, in summer it's really hot there and none outside pools.

Benefits of the internship

I learned a lot about their culture and about research project in the institute, where i worked. I made many friendships with forreign students from all of the world, local people and i improved my english. I had the opportunity to travel to close countries.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Communication with kazakh IAESTE was without problems, they were helpful with everything we needed to help. They mamanged for us a lot of trips, we didn't have take care about anything about these trips.

Overall experience with IAESTE

I had only good expereinces with IAESTE. They were very helpful from the beggining to the end. They were doing much more than they should and i'm very grateful for their help and care.
