About the country

Location of the place

Lausanne is beuatiful city by the lake of Geneva. By train you can get to Geneva within one hour.

City

It is a medium size city. There are two universities, so it is full of young people. Lots of sport possibilities at the university or anywhere else. City is on the big slope but there are many buses for transport. Also two metro lines. One coming from the lake up to the hill and second to the university.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

It is possible to make many hikking trips. Within less than one hour you can get to the city Montreux and from there take a train in many directions. Or you can go north from Lausanne to park Jura. It is also worthed to visit castle Gruyere and cheese factory in the town.

They don´t require french but in my opinion is better to have at least basic knowledge. Some of the coleagues are not so good in english.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I came on my own by car.
There is a IAESTE meeting usually every two weeks in Lausanne or in Geneva. But in general there is not many trainees in Lausanne. IAESTE Switzerland is organising many weekend events where you can meet trainees from other cities. There is one almost every weekned in the summer and also few in the winter as well as a skiing weekend.

Meeting other foreign students

We were maximum three IESTE trainees at one time. Also there are few members wich just come to the meetings because they have experience with IAESTE or they are members of IAESTE Switzerland. If you are looking for somebody else to meet there is a facebook page "International friends in Lausanne" where you can write that you want to meet someone.

Sport and culture

There is a big outdoor sport centre by the lake at Vidy. People are playing there basketball, football, etc. Doing athletics, water sports and archery.
There are often some festivals - Street food festival or some open air concerts in the town.

Food, local specialties

Applies for whole Switzerland: Fondue, Raclette and Chocolate. Also good vine from the vineyrads between Lausanne and Montreux.

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

I have been using mainly skype. Calling with your czech or other foreign card is not good idea. For having internet and be able to call in Switzerland I bought prepayed card in Coop shop - Coop mobile.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Take copy of your bith certificate to apply for the working permit and enough money in cash for first weeks. It takes some time before they send you credit card.
