Luleå is in the northern part of Sweden, really near to the polar circle.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

There is awesome nature for hiking and bike during the summer and enough snow during the winter for any winter sport.
There is a lot of awesome places in Norrbotten (northern part of Sweden), but you need a car to reach them.

Work description

Pretreatment of cellulose-based materials for the ethanol production.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

Salary was 11 000:- sek and living cost was around 7000 - 8000:- sek. So there was enough money to cover the price of the flight, equipment and extra activities.

Language requirements

English is necessary. Swedish people, in general, have really good knowledge of English so you don't really need it.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

3500:- sek. IAESTE found it for me.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Be careful, about communication with IEASTE members and make sure that someone picks you at the airport. In my case, my new roommate picks me up. I saw that there were people picked by a group of members, and there were people that no one picks them up and they had to find their way home themselves.

Meeting other foreign students

In Luleå, there is a really good organisation for Erasmus students called Lurc, which proved a lot of organised trips and events. The nice thing for IAESTE interns in Luleå is that we can join them :)

Sport and culture

There is a gym on the university campus, swimming pool in the city centrum and possibility of free ice skating three times per week during the winter. When the sea is frozen, the city prepares ice road, so you can walk and skate there.

Food, local specialties

Swedish food is based on potatoes, meat and fish. They are used to eat a lot of vegetables.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

If you are coming for winter I would recommend you to have proper winter shoes, jacket and sky trousers. The temperature during the winter can drop to -20. The standard winter temperature is from -5 to -15.
During the summer, Luleå is a rainy city. So it is nice to have waterproof clothes.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

My personal experience is overall quite ok. However, in the same department, I had few other interns who came through the IAESTE and I saw enough to say that you should be really careful. Make sure that someone picks you at the airport and that some member of IAESTE check your flat before you come to the city for an internship.

Overall experience with IAESTE

I am really grateful for the opportunity I get when I get the internship through the IAESTE. I just feel a bit sad when I see how the organisation works. I know this is all about the people who work for it. When I needed help and answer the question which was connected with IAESTE, It took them a long time and few times I didn't get the answer. That happened in both cases, Czech and Swedish IAESTE.
