About the country

Location of the place

The office is located (or was - they planned to move to another place) in a neighbourhood called Anderlecht, which is pretty close from the city centre. The nearest metro station is 10 minutes walk away. This neighbourhood is not one of the prettiest ones in Brussel, but you can find everything you need there. The office is located in enterprise building including canteen.

City

Brussel is a beautiful city - the capital of Europe. I have spent a lot of time walking around and exploring new places, neighbourhoods, parks and gorgeous buildings. Public transport is very well developed and comparable with Prague.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

There are pretty cheap trains in Belgium (very comparable with Czech rails) and they are also pretty fast. You can easily go for a trip to another city. During my stay I visited Antwerp, Mechelen, Ghent, Brugge and Oostende - all of those are nice. One day trip is enough.

Employer

Employer

1010au is just a small office. By the time I was there they had only 4 employees and 3 interns (including me). Their environment is very international - our nationalities were Czech, Belgian (2x), Spanish, French, Arabian (UAE) and Lithuanian. Everyone was super friendly.

Work description

I participated on many different projects in different phases (offers, competitions, building documentation, researches). Mostly I worked with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign or Photoshop. Some interns also needed SketchUp, Autocad or Draft side. If you can not work with a specific program it is not a problem - they always tried to assign certain work with the person who knows how to do that. I was required to work on drawings, plans, axonometries, collages, sections and 3D models. With most of the projects I was assigned to another worker who told me what exactly to work on, and I consulted my piece of work with her/him.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

I received €210 per week which was enough for cost of living. Totally enough for the internship, I didn't need any extra money.

Language requirements

All employees spoke English very well. Most of them were also able to speak French or Dutch.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I was living in the studio (one room flat) in the Ixelles - by my opinion one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods. It was sufficient for 6 weeks but if I stayed longer, I'd prefer to share a flat with someone else.
IAESTE found this place for me and assisted with moving in.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

One of the members picked me up at the airport and toke me to the apartment. He also provided all the information I asked and lent me some stuff I needed (basic dishes, sheets, etc.)

Meeting other foreign students

There were only 3 interns in Brussel but I had a couple of opportunities to meet them together with IAESTE members and their friends and go out for a beer, street festival etc. They tried to do some event once a week.

Sport and culture

There is a lot of stuff going on in Brussel in the summer. Every weekend there is some street festival, beer festival, chocolate festival ..... A lot of outdoor festivals! Nice opportunity to go out and have fun.

Food, local specialties

Fries are the basic! You can get it almost everywhere as well as waffles with whipped cream or Nutella.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

No problem at all. IAESTE Czech Republic was really helpful to me before my internship started (I asked them to contact IAESTE Belgium because of lack of communication with Brussels). After that I didn't need any assistance.
It is reallz easy to reach anybody in Czech Rebulic on mobile phone since roaming has been cancelled.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

I can strongly recommend this internship to other students. It has been a pleasure for me and I have learned a lot.

What not to forget with you

Umbrella - it is raining a lot.

Benefits of the internship

Great opportunity to learn different approach to architectural work.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Not a lot of IAESTE members during the summer in Brussel. I met two. Both of them were helpful when I needed anything.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Very good
