About the country

Location of the place

Frantschach - St. Gertraud lies in a valley of Koralpe in Carinthia. It is located near the motorway between Graz and Glagenfurt.

City

Frantschach is a village (ca 2000 inhabitants). It has a supermarket, bakery, few restaurants/pubs/cafes and the big paper plant. It is surrounded by mountains. It's 3 km from a town Wolfsberg where you can find most of the important facilities (shops, restaurants, doctors...).

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Near Frantschach are many hiking and mountain biking routes.
During summer there is a possibility to buy a summer ticket (89 EUR) for unlimited traveling in ÖBB trains and Intercity buses which is perfect for traveling all over Austria.

Work description

I worked in the Food Safety lab of Research and Development department. I was given a new software for Migration modelling from packaging into food. I tested the software and taught my colleagues how to use it.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

1050 EUR per month. It was more than sufficient due to very cheap accommodation.

Language requirements

Excellent English or German. As the company is in a small village, knowledge of German language would be useful.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Mondi guest house - a big flat (3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen, living room, dinning room, laundry and garden) most of the time only for me, 200 m from my office. The price was 100 EUR per month. Provided by the company.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

The internship was provided by IAESTE Vienna but the place of Internship (Frantschach) is ca 250 km away from Vienna so it was a bit difficult to meet IAESTE members. But they were so helpful and nice!! We met for 5 mins in Vienna railway station when I was travelling to Frantschach. I got a great welcome bag. Then we met during my weekend in Vienna. They organised quite many events but I didn't join them.

Meeting other foreign students

Another IAESTE trainee arrived to Frantschach in September. We shared the flat and travelled together to Vienna. Most of the time I spent with my boyfriend who was in Graz.

Sport and culture

It's a perfect place for mountain hiking and biking. For culture you have to go to Graz.

Food, local specialties

I was cooking every day. There is a canteen at MONDI but I didn't go there. Austrian cuisine is similar to Czech (Schnitzel, sausages, dumplings, apfelstrudel, Sacher cake etc.). Austrian wines are surprisingly good.
