Bc. Jan Vaverka, Brno University of Technology,
ročník 4About the country
Location of the place
Almaty, SE of Kazakhstan. On the south side of the city center. Mountains on the south side of the city, on the north side is flatland. Climate si very continental: warm summer, cold winter and cold nights.
City
City was rebuilded after Kebin earthquake in 1911. In the city live approx 1,6 milions of inhabitants and it is huge. Streets have clasical net structure which is good for orientation. In the city you will not find historical building, only exeption is cathedral built in 1907 made of wood without using nails. You should also visit Green bazar, Arasan spa, Kok Tobe hill or state museum.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
You can get to mountains very easily with public transport or taxi. Easier to reach is valley of Malaja Almatinka, where is big ice skating stadium and ski resort with lifts operating during summer. In other valley is beautiful Big Almatin Lake. You should also visit NP Altyn Emel (desert) and Charyn canyon (smaller version of Grand canyon).

40500 KZT/month, teoretically enough, but you travel because you want to see the world and if you want to experience Kazakhstan, you need minimum 60000 KZT per month.
Language requirements
English, A2 could be enough. Russian language is not required, but it's very helpful in everyday life.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
For free , provided by Uni, located inside of uni campus
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
My supervisor picked-up me. IAESTE members are helpful. Thery provide organised trips and helps with everyday problems like: no dishes in dorm. Their activity rapidly increased after new foreign students arrived, which was unfourtunately two weeks before I left.
Meeting other foreign students
Selforganised. Most of my stay we were group of 4 students.
Sport and culture
National sport is Kokpar. Something between polo and rugby with dead goat without head as a "ball". But you can't see it in the city. Than football. In the city there is a football club FC Kairat. Almaty is not really cultural city like Astana. I visited only us-kz festival.
Food, local specialties
Food is more fatty than european. Specialities are Beshbarmak (soup from horse or mutton meat with noodles), Shaslik, Plov (mutton or beef with rice), Kumys (alkohol drink made of horse milk), Šubat (alkohol drink made of camel milk) etc. You have to try horse steak.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Internet is everywhere in big cities and is cheaper than you could expect. 8GB cost 1500 KZT per month, thats approx. 4 euros
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Learn azbuka and basics of russian language. Get ready for warm weather.
What not to forget with you
RAID, it's not easy to buy it there. The rest depends on condition of your dorm.
Benefits of the internship
You can see "the world". See the diferences between euroatlantic civilization and rest of the world.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
Harsh, in begenning. I was maybe for month pushing hard to get invitation letter which is necessary for visa procedure. I got it 11 days before depature, on late friday, so I had to travel separately to ambassy on monday (I wanted to use agency) and hope that I will get the passport back in time before depature. After I arrived everything was OK.
Overall experience with IAESTE
I will have overall experince after we will finish all procedures :-)
