About the country

Location of the place

Malta is a small island so everything is close. I lived in the city of Msida and worked in Lija. It takes 40 minutes by bus to get from Msida to Lija.
In Msida, there is the University, IAESTE local committee and all trainees live there.
You can buy all stuff you need in some shop. Travelling from Msida to the capital Valletta is easy - you can also take a walk, it takes about 1 hour. If you want to go to the beach and enjoy the sea, you should walk 30 minutes or catch a bus. Lija is a city for living, so not so dynamic, but there are a lot of nice churches and really beautiful parks.

City

There are many cities in Malta, but they are so close to each other that it is unrecognizable where is the end of the first city and the beginning of the second one.
There are many shops with food, post office, university hospital, etc. in Malta.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

You can travel by public transport - buses - in Malta. The problem is that they are late or too early. Sometimes you can wait for a bus about one hour and it should go every 15 minutes.
Another problem could be when you don't ask the driver about his journey. Sometimes he can have a sign that he is going somewhere but it is not true.
Walking in Malta is quite dangerous, there are really bad drivers. But when you are patient you can travel around whole island and also to other two islands Gozo and Comino.

Employer

Employer

I worked in Plant biotechnology centre. It was an interesting place, the problem was that they did not have work for me so I was always bored.
When they had some samples for measuring (plants with bacteria or fungi diseases) they did not have good equipment. My colleagues were really kind people.

Work description

When we had some samples for measuring, it was about growing microorganisms on plate, then making samples for microscopy. I read a lot of books about plant diseases and fungus.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

Malta is an expensive country. The truth is that I spent a lot of money extra for some traveling, fees to interesting places and restaurants.

Language requirements

The official language is English. It is great because everybody can understand you. People are kind here and they will help you when they can.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Accommodation was provided by IAESTE. It was rented by an Italian guy, he didn't speak English. The price was about 260 euros per month. I lived with 2 guys in one room and we were 6 people together, mostly Italians, in the whole flat.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

IAESTE wrote to me before my arrival in Malta. They helped me with ordering a card for the public transport. They waited for me at the airport and took me to my flat.
They went with me to work on my first day and they helped me fill in all the documents needed to get my salary.

Meeting other foreign students

I met 4 other students on the second day of my stay here. I was there in September and it's not the main season (during July and August there were about 7 students on IAESTE internships).
2 people went home earlier than me so I was there with one girl and I also met one Czech girl. There are many friendly people, so it's not a problem to find friends to go swimming, go to a bar or just for a talk.

Sport and culture

I went for an exercise of zumba, you can also go swimming or running.
Every weekend there are some festivals, exhibitions and other events.

It's an island full of young people and there are many events for them.

Food, local specialties

I am a vegetarian but it wasn't a problem on Malta.
There are a lot of fresh vegetables and fruit. I cooked myself, but you can also go for a meal to a restaurant, there are also many fast foods.

There is a special baked pastry they sell on streets. It was warm and great for a snack.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

We had wifi in our flat, it was quite slow so it wasn't very good for calling on skype, but it was enough for chatting.
Near the University, there was also wifi eduroam and in every bigger restaurant or fast food there was free wifi.
You can also buy a SIM card there (about 10 euros), it was good for communication with other students on Malta.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Be prepared for everything, I expected sun but the truth is that there were also big storms and floods.
No matter where you go, the important is to try to live on your own in an unknown country.

What not to forget with you

sunbathing cream
good mood
adapter for Malta

Benefits of the internship

I think that going somewhere abroad is a good experience for everybody.
I met a lot of kind people, found new friends, got to know new country and habits.
I also know that I am really happy that I live in CR :D.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

It was good, I am a member of IAESTE CR so I know that we take care of trainees more, but it was enough for living there.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Very good
