About the country

Location of the place

Manipal is located in the state Karnataka in South West India nearby the coast. There is a monsoon season during summer. Bigger city Udupi with railway station is 5 km away and you can get there by bus in 10 minutes. Closest airport is in Mangalore.

City

Although Manipal is small city with only 35 000 population, additional 25 000 students make this place so different against the rest of India. There are many restaurants and bars with western standarts. You can get around the city easily by walk or rickshaw.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

There are many interesting places around, which can be reached mainly by overnight buses or trains. For example during the weekends I visited Jogg Falls and Murudeshwar, Goa, Kerala (Kochi, Munnar, Allepey), Mysore, Hampi and before my return flight Mumbai. Around Manipal are nice beaches. Although it isn't allowed to swim, it's amazing to rent a motorbike and ride around.

Work description

My project was about modeling and simulation of self-balancing single wheel. I had to do CAD model, structural analysis of main parts and then proceed optimization and validation of design. After that I imported CAD model to Simulink/Simscape Multibody enviroment and applied control mechanism to balance the wheel under gravity and applied force.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

I've got 6000 INR per month. It can't even cover expenditures for food, so be prepared to pay on your own.

Language requirements

They required exellent English, but to be honest it's not necessary at all so good English is enough.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Accommodation was provided by IAESTE in International Hostel for free! It has actually better standart than I'm used to from Czech Republic. We were supposed to be at hostel before 11 pm, but they didn't care so much about boys. Other disadvantage is humidity so be prepared to fight with mold because of that.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Local IAESTE did really good job. There was ensured taxi from Mangalore airport after arrival. They organised many events. Most awesome one was Namaste Week, which included ball, cousine night, bollywood night, etc. They also organised few weekend trips.

Meeting other foreign students

There were more than 50 IAESTE interns and to meet them was actually one of the best things about this internship. We were going together to restaurants every day. We had a lot of fun together!

Sport and culture

You can go to Marena Sport Center, where you can choose many sports to do. In End Poin Park is nice place, where to run. We also played football or volleyball with other interns and IAESTE members.
You will get a lot of oppotunities how to get in touch with Indian culture.. in temples, during Namaste Week or in the cinema while watching bollywood movie.

Food, local specialties

Indian food was amazing and I wasn't sick of ot even after two months. My favorites were all gravies with naan or chicken biriany. For breakfast try masala dosa or puri bhaji.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Wi-Fi around campus and 1,5 GB of 4G data per day just for 200 INR per month make the communication really easy.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

You should safe some money on your journey to travel as much as possible.

What not to forget with you

You can buy everything there so you don't need to much, but take raincoat, umbrella and some bottle of slivovice.

Benefits of the internship

Good item for your CV, meeting many new friends, a lot of fun, exploring new destinations in totally differrent culture environment

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Everything went smoothly, I had a buddy to help me with any issues

Overall experience with IAESTE

I absolutely recommend to go for that internship. It was already my second internship with IAESTE and both were the best summers I've ever had.
