About the country
Location of the place
Kaiserslautern is a city in southwest Germany, located in the Bundesland of Rhineland-Palatinate at the edge of the Palatinate Forest.
Kaiserslautern is home to 100 000 people. Additionally, approximately 45,000 NATO military personnel inhabit the city and its surrounding distric. The city is also home to football club 1. FC Kaiserslautern that has won the German championship four times. It is a modern centre of information and communications technology and home to a well-known university, a technical college and many international research institutes located throughout the city. Kaiserslautern is located in one of the largest contiguous forested areas in Central Europe, the Palatinate Forest, which offers numerous hiking trails and lakes to visitors.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Near Kaiserslautern is a city of Mannheim, Heidelberg and two hours away there are cities like Frankfurt am Main and Stuttgart. For a trip, I definitely recommend Heidelberg. It's famous for its historical core, castle and university. It is one of the most popular destinations of foreign tourists in Germany. Then I recommend to visit Frankfurt. It is the fifth-largest city of Germany ant it is the largest financial centre in continental Europe. Frankfurt is a city of commerce, culture, education, tourism and transportation. Nearby is located Frankfurt Airport - one of the world's busiest.
My employer was the University of Kaiserslautern.I worked at the Department of Thermodynamics.
My work was measuring surface tension of various liquids and making a Matlab program which can calculate PC-SAFT equation.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
750 euros per month (tax included)
English - good
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
I had a single room in a flat inhabited by 2 other people, which one of them was the land lord. The flat is located in the city center and it costs 300 euros for the month. It was provided by IAESTE.
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
I had awesome local committee Franziska which pick me up in Main Station Kaiserslautern and gave me salary. Meetings were organised every week, but unfortunately it was during work days and not weekends so I didn't had time to attend them.
Meeting other foreign students
In work I met other internsts, but they were Americans and they didn't cooperate with IAESTE.
Sport and culture
Kaiserslautern is football town. Everybody here plays or watch football. There are two open air swimming pools, which are amazing during summer, and many tennis courts and of course football fields.
Food, local specialties
I ate curry wurst, which is basically sausage in red curry pepper poured with ketchup, but I didn't liked it.
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Phone calls were at same prices at in Czech Republic.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
If you prefer small town and be surrounded by forest you will enjoy Kaiserslautern.
What not to forget with you
Credit card and at least 400 euros. Everything else you can buy here.
Benefits of the internship
I have learned some German words and I improved my Matlab skills.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
Very good, I had no problem.
Overall experience with IAESTE
IAESTE is very reliable.
