About the country

Location of the place

Manipal is on south-west coastline of India in state Karnataka. The whole coastline is covered with palm trees. Rainy season is from march to september. It rains every day in this period (sometimes only once a day, sometimes the whole day) and it's cloudy 5/7 days of the week. During rainy season it's prohibited to swim in the sea.

City

Manipal is a town located 20 minutes by motorbike from the sea. It's basically a town in the middle of the rainforest. Buildings are quite new and there are lot of restaurants included Mc Donald's, KFC, Subway. The whole town is one big campus with security guys at every corner. It's much safer than the rest of India. It's prohibited to smoke on the street (but it's possible at some hidden places). Everything is in walking or rickshaw distance.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Closest airport is in Mangalore (2 hours away by car). One big city called Udupi is 10 minutes far by bus right at the coast of Indian ocean. You can explore the surroundings by motorbike.
Possible trips:
UDUPI DISTRICT (Hanging Bridge, Krishna Temple in Udupi, Kapu beach and Lighthouse, Maple, Kodi and Hampe Beach, Murudeshwar)
MYSORE (Mysore palace, Chamundi Hill, Brindavan Garden)
GOA STATE (Baga Beach, Aguada Fort, Anjuna Beach, Old Goa)
KERALA STATE (Allepey, Munnar, Eravikulam National Park, Tee Plantation)
HAMPI

Employer

Work description

I worked on liquid crystals. I prepared new materials and measured their properties. It was basic laboratory work. I had flexible working hours. I worked around 4 hours per day (there was another intern and he had same work as me and we used same machines). I saw my supervisor maybe once a week, we discussed my results every time and he gave me new work after.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

Salary was 5,800 Rs. I think you need at least double to survive (just basics without trips, expensive entertainment, alcohol). I spent around 28,000 Rs per month but I made trips every week and bought stuff/food what I wanted.

Language requirements

Basic level of English is sufficient.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Accommodation was provided by University. It cost 1,000 Rs (deduction from salary). All interns stayed in New International Hostel, Block C. It's new building with 17 floors, AC and cafeteria downstairs. We stayed in rooms by 1 or 2. Rooms were new and looked luxurious like european hotel of middle quality. Each room had its own bathroom.
There were small cockroaches like everywhere in India (someone had lot of them, someone none, I killed around 10 of them in 2 months). In rainy season there is a mould problem. The hostel was divided to men's and women's parts/floors, emergency staircase was locked so we could not visit each other. There was curfew after 23:00 (you risk problems if you break it).
After one month of my internship they moved all interns to same floors and we could visit each other after curfew.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

IAESTE members arranged free pick-up at the airport (taxi drived stood at the airport with my name). They welcomed me nicely. We ate lunch/dinner in a group every day. They arranged some trips and one event called Namaste Manipal festival.

Meeting other foreign students

There were maybe 50 interns, we had lunch/dinner every day. Parties were very often. We arranged some trips only in a group of interns without IAESTE members. Everybody was open-minded with similar thinking. I made lot of new friends.

Sport and culture

There is huge sport centre called Marena. It has 7 floors included swimming pool, sport courts, gym...
There is a cinema in Manipal. Lot of bars, clubs, restaurants...

Food, local specialties

Food is really great but I missed Czech meals at the end. I loved fresh coconuts and milkshake called Sweet Lassi. I ate chicken with gravy every day. You can try lot of spicy food, because everything is spicy in India. :D I discovered that veg food is also delicious. You can order Indian, Chinese or Thai cuisine everywhere. I didn't like Indian breakfasts (they are quite boring and spicy!) and desserts (it's just pure sugar-thing).

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Facebook, e-mail, whatsapp, skype.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Get ready for big cultural shock! It's completely different world. Nothing works, lot of stupid rules, different culture. Don't worry about problems, you need to chill and enjoy it whole.
Vaccination: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid (it's minimum but it should be enough)

What not to forget with you

Anti-diarrhoea pills!
Probiotics, Antibite, Antigerm gel, Needle for SIM card removal, EU-Socket adapter, Copy of passport, visa, Passport-size photos, International vaccination passport, Comfortable! flipflops/sandals, Slivovitz

Benefits of the internship

You will discover completely new world. You will meet people from the whole world. You will party with crazy-dancing Indians. You will work in a team with foreigners and you will gain precious experience in your field of study.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Great. We had WhatsApp group where we discussed everything.

Overall experience with IAESTE

IAESTE internship was life-changing period for me. It's unique possibility to gain experience and spend summer abroad. India was specific, because it's so different from Europe. I had awesome summer and so can you!
