About the country

Location of the place

Rudny is located at the north of Kazakhstan close to Russian boarders. The closest bigger cities are Kostanay and Chelyabinsk (Russia) so it means that almost everybody is able to speak russian language.

City

Rudny is quite small city with approximately 100 000 inhabitants. Most of those people work in huge iron mines so the city has strong industry wiev. The city has couple of restaurants, coffee houses, parks but not that much like we are used to have in "European" cities. Close to university is located swimming poll, gym and sport complex.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Landspace around the city is affected by heavy industry whole city is surrounden by iron mines The most interesting trip that you try is to travel Kostanay city. You can get there by bus or taxi. For another trips is nessesery to have car. If you prefer walking trips I can recommend track that follow the river.

Employer

Employer

Rudny industrial institute faculty of electrical engineering

Work description

I prepared presentations with power engineering content with main focus on electrical grids. I became a teacher for a while. I taught students at all levels. My presentations were held in English and main purpose was to show students how does it work in EU. My work was in cooperation with dean of faculty, he proved every presentation and give me some advices how to present it.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

I got a schollarship. I was around 40 000 Tenge (Aproximately 2 500 Kč). It was enough for living there. School provide me free accomodation and food.

Language requirements

The required level of english was exelent but at only two persons were able to speak at this level. But almost everybody is able to speak russian so it is realy worth it to know at lease the basic. But surprisingly is not required in Internship documents.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Acomodation was provided by university at theirs dormitories and it was free. The level of dormitories was at usual level. My room was normaly equiped: table, chair, bed, two big wardrobes. Toalet and bathroom was shared with another 3 persons.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I traveled couple days ago I got to Rudny so I manage whole transportation on my own. When I arrived to Rundy train station one of the IAESTE coordinator waited for me and lifted me to the dormitories. I was only one foreign student so most of the events was organised only for my. The IAESTE coorninator and employes at university were really willing to show me city or near interresting areas.

Meeting other foreign students

In the city there was no foreign student.

Sport and culture

Dormitories were equiped by small gym, but most of the time it was quite full. There were an option to go to close sport centre. Culture program of the city was not that much interesting. I went to museum of Rudny and saw student theater.

Food, local specialties

Food is one of the best thing what Kazakhstan can offer you (if your not a vegan). Most of the foods consist a lot of meat and especialy fat meat. I would recommend to try Shaslik and "Beshparmac". You can also try a lot of traditional russian foods like borscht or pierogi.
I ate in university cafeteria most of the time so the variety of food were not so huge. But if you visit normal restaurant you will be suprised by amount of kinds of food. Food in those restauranst is really delicious and cheap.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Communication with Czech republic is quite compliated beause of time shift. I mostly communicate via internet (whatsapp or messenger). Phone expences (local calls and date) are really cheap so its worth it to buy local SIM card.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Expect that the main language of communication will be russian language so be prepared, at lease have a basic knowledge.

What not to forget with you

Take a warm clothes. The weather is changing really fast.

Benefits of the internship

It gaves me quick wiev to teachers work, improve my presentation skills and showed me new culture that is really different to our. It also helps me with my russian language. It gave me an image if I am able to live somewhere abroad for long time.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Cooperation was quite good but you have to count with longer perion for solving your issues.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Definitelly positive, I am really glad that I have opportunity to got this experience. All the people in IAESTE Czech Republic or Kazakhstan were really helpfull and I am really thankful that they provide me this internship.
