About the country

Location of the place

Location in Central Europe is verry good for travelling around Europe. And it is very close for students from Czech Republic or from Slovakia.

City

Vienna is the capital and largest city of Austria and one of the nine states of Austria. Vienna is Austria's primary city, with a population of about 2 million. Vienna is very nice modern city with a lot of possibilities to spend your free time.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Bratislava, Brno, Linz, Salzburg, Insbruck, also Prrague is very close (4,5 hour by bus or train)

Employer

Employer

Boku University, Vienna, Chair of Bioinformatics (department of bioinformatics)

Work description

I was focusing on research at the Boku Chair of Bioinformacs under supervision of Assoc Prof. David Philip Kreil. The research was inspired by article published by the group before. I have my own molecular modeling project but my collagues and boss were bioinformations. They were very supportive but they couldn't help me a lot (because of different field). Most of the time I was working alone and I was only discussing results. At the end of my internsip I was discussing my results with professor from other instute. It looks promising but there is still a lot of work to be done. I've learned some new methods in molecular modeling (protein-peptide docking) and working with big datasets. Together with my supervisor in Vienna, we would like to publish the results during 2018.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

1000EUR/month (850 EUR/month after taxes). I spent roughly half of the salary for accomodation, 50 euros for public transport and the rest is quite sufficient for living in Vienna if you are buying food in supermarket. Pubs and restaurants are generally more expensive.

Language requirements

English - excellent. The working enviroment was very international. I had to also read a lot of scientific papers. It is good to learn some basic german words like Grüß Gott or Danke schön (just to feel better in Vienna). But basically English is enough in Vienna.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Student dormitories, 350 EUR/month, OeAD (https://housing.oead.at/en/), 950 EUR deposit (I got it back when I was moving out)

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

IAESTE Boku member picked me up at bus stations, I was meeting other IAESTE members at the university, Christmas market or local bars. Winter time is not very convinient for organized events because of lack of trainees.

Meeting other foreign students

There were a lot of foreign students at my dormitories (Erasmus or full time students). I was on internship during winter time. So there weren't much IAESTE trainees in Vienna (most of them are coming in summer).

Sport and culture

I used to run in Vienna, Donaupark is very nice place for running. Austrian Alps mountains is a great place fo skiing (in winter) or hiking/climbing (in summer). I recommend to visit some musem in Vienna. I was in Naturhistorisches Museum Wien and it was really great :)

Food, local specialties

Schnitzel, wurst, beer. The typical Austrian food is close to German or Czech food.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Vienna is very close to Prague. I went to visit Prague few times during my internship. There were no problems with communication.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Look for accomodation in advance. You can pay a lot of money as deposit (I had to pay 950 EUR). You will need probably a lot of money in cash when you are moving in (I had to pay around 1500 EUR when I was moving in - first month rent + fees + deposit + monthly ticket). If you will go to the same working place you should be ready to work by or own and to be skilled enough.

What not to forget with you

Good mood and savings for first month before you get salary. You can get other things in Vienna,

Benefits of the internship

Good friends, networking, possible collaboration. It was an interesting experience.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

-

Overall experience with IAESTE

It was my second internship. I was in Zagreb (Croatia) for 6 weeks in 2015. This was my second internship.

Other comments

I would recommend this internship to anybody who is skilled enough and who does not have problem to work on the project alone. For me it was sometimes tough.
