About the country

Location of the place

Rijeka is situated in northern part of Croatia.

City

Rijeka is harbor and it used to be industrial city, nowadays is more students city. It is not turistic place at all. City beaches are located approximately 4 km far form city center, there is possibility to take a bus thanks public transportation which is not usually on time. There is free public transportation during the night. There are many interresting historical place to see in Rijeka. It is not the cleanest city, but nice atmosphare is around and it is completely save place to be.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

There is a bus station, train station or you can even take a ferry to islands around. Nowadays there is also Uber in Rijeka. You can go to hike Učka hill, national park Risnjak, Opatia, Pula, island Krk or Cres.

Employer

Employer and a whole company GP Krk (GP Rijeka) was just awesome. I didnt have any problems, everyhing was organized very well. The only confusing thing is the place of the main office. It is not actually in Rijeka, but on island Krk (50min by car one way). They provided lunch for free.

Work description

At the beginig of my traineeship my employer let me choose where I want to work - on costruction site of in office. So I decided to start on construction site and later on in office. Eventhough I spend every day 2 hours on way in car to the office, I enjoyed so much because of my coworker. Thanks to this travelling I get so much informations about croatian live, political situation, have fun...
GP Krk it the third biggest civil engineering company in Croatia, there are going on many construction sites at the same time, so you choose which one is the most suitalbe for your field of study. Office work was perfect as well. I helped with the calculations, drawings in AutoCad. They are also willing to help you and let work on final thesis. They organized many excursion on very different places related to civil engineering only for me.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

800 kun/week, it is about 110 euro/week. It is completely sufficient for local condition

Language requirements

English B2, almost everybody in office speak english, on construction site engineers only.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Accommondation was provided by IAESTE in old student dormithories. Price is supercheep only 25 euro/month. But I wanted more privacy so I decided to move and stay with local people in appartement close to city center 130 euro/room/month.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Nobody was waiting for me, because I came by car directly to dormithories and I wasnt sure about the arrival time. I havent seen anybody for first 3 days. I suppose to do paperwork with somebody, but he was busy in the end, so somebody else should show up, but again busy...last option was nice girl Ana Skifič who had free time for me and she helped me with all paperworks. We had great time together. Beside her and her boyfried I havent met anybody form IAESTE members.
Rijeka IAESTE members havent organized any trip, only pub meetings time to time. But there is possibility to joint longer trips which Croation Iaeste provides.
In the end we organized trips by ourselfs - with another trainee students without any help.

Meeting other foreign students

I randomly met other Iaeste students in dorms so we hang out together. There are many summer school or erasmus intern in dorms.

Sport and culture

Easy running, swimming in sea, hiking. About culture, many events are going on in city center during summer, there is all the time place to go.

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

You can sent a letter by post and wait for answer.....kidding... of course there is a wifi almost everywhere, so eventhough you are not from EU and dont have free rooming, you ca be in touch by internet. Or you can buy local simcard with data connetction.

Overall experience with IAESTE

I dont like to cooperate with Iaeste at all. It is a third part between student and company and it just take time and energy to get from Iaeste all necessary documetents. It would be much more easy to communicate directly with the company. I had to explained my situation to thousands people because everybody told me that somebody else will text me but nobody did.... I understand there has to be a rule to follow according to contract, but the cooperation with Iaeste was the most anoying. I had experienced with a few programs (Work and Travel, Erasmus Internship, Erasmus study, working for travel agency abroad..) and non of them was so disorganized like Iaeste was. Mabye the reason was I choosed the post praxe, not a regular internship. But in the end, of course I have to say thanks a lot to Iaeste, because I wouldnt find such a great internship without it.
