About the country

Location of the place

Small country in southern Central Europe with huge variety of landscapes - mountains with forests but also several beaches on the coast. There is a good connection with surrounding countries.

City

Ljubljana is really beautiful rather small city in the heart of Slovenia. Everything is accessible by bike - that is also the best way of transport within the city. Lately there is an increase of tourism (because of that many students spend their summer out of Ljubljana) but as compared with Prague it is still OK.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

There are many possibilities what to visit in Slovenia - lakes (Bled and even more beautiful Bohinj), Soca river, Vipava Valley, Koper, etc. I would recommend to arrive by car sou you can use it for travelling on weekends.

Employer

Employer

I think that Mr. Kalamar wants to give the chance to come to Ljubljana and enjoy the internship but does not want to bother very much with it. Even if he gave me the job I often felt like it is just killing time. I did not felt I am any useful. If you would go to the same company I strongly recommend to take a lot of days off. I was too shy and I regret it now.

Work description

The office is situated in the city centre - it takes about 15 minutes walk from the dormitory. I worked in AutoCAD - in 2D and 3D and Photoshop. I was trying to help others with smaller tasks.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

For me it was sufficient for living and travelling, but I was trying to live on the budget. If you are in Slovenia during the period when it is possible to use boni (student discount for food in restaurants) you can save quite a lot.

Language requirements

English was required and I think that "good" is enough. In Slovenia many people do speak English very well - even in grocery store etc.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I stayed in a dorm and the price was around 100e for a month. I had a roommate and we shared a bathroom and a kitchen with 2 other students. It often happens, that local students pay the dormitory during the summer but stay in their home towns - because of the dormitory is so cheap for them.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Everything worked really great. They helped me with everything. We had regular meeting once a week in a pub and there were also many others events. Some of them were organised by local IAESTE members, some were organised by us.

Meeting other foreign students

There were many other students - around 10. We were together almost every day after work and we were travelling on weekends. Some of theme stayed in the dormitory and some of them stayed in flats with local students.

Sport and culture

There in possible to use a gym and a football field or tennis court in the dorm. Also we were using shared bikes in Ljubljana for getting everywhere. It is the cheapest and the most efficient way of transport.
There are many festivals in Ljubljana in summer. Going to the open air cinema in Ljubljana castle is great experience.

Food, local specialties

I would recommend Štruklji (there is really cheap place near Kongresni Trg), burek, anything made of potatoes, etc.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Internet

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Do not buy a bus ticket, use bikes. There is really great advantage for students - boni. Students do have cheaper meals - even meals for free. Unfortunately during the summer there is certain period when you can not use it. Check the conditions on the internet.

What not to forget with you

Take some clothes and shoes for rainy weather - it rains a lot! Bring repellent or buy it as soon as possible.

Benefits of the internship

I met many great people - both from local IAESTE and also other students. Ljubljana is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been visited.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

They were great - really helpful and friendly.

Overall experience with IAESTE

I loved everything except of the work. I felt useless and it was just killing time...
