About the country

Location of the place

The university is located in the downton of Belgrade.

City

Belgrade

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

A lot of opportunities for trips and travels. Exploring of Belgrade takes approx. one weekend. Than there is couple places which are worth to see in Serbia; Tara, Uvac, Novi Sad, Zlatibor, NP Djerdab. Also, it's quite cheap and doable to travel to other Balkan countries (Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Greece, Romania, Bosnia and Hervegovina...)

Employer

Employer

University of Belgrade, Dpt. of organic technology. I was working at the polymer lab with other interns, which was great because we helped each other a lot. The lab staff was very friendly and helpful.

Work description

The research was focused on the preparation of biopolymer materials - films and beads. Those materials have usage in the development of food foils. We were also looking for new possible candidates for crosslinking with used polymers.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

12500 RSD per month. Sufficient when very low outcomes and cultural activities.

Language requirements

English

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

IAESTE appartment, 9500 RSD per month, provided by IAESTE.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

IAESTE member picked me up in the city centre when I arrived. She showed me the way to the appartment. Than we saw IAESTE members every week during cultural activities (visiting local pubs - kafanas, playing games, occasional trips,...).

Meeting other foreign students

In our appartment there lived a lot of international students. At the beginning there were 2 Japan guys, Namibian girl, Australian girl, Korean girl, Thai girl, Portuguese guy and German guy. During the period of the internship some people left and other international students joined the appartment.

Sport and culture

There was a gym right next to our University, 1700 RSD per month. It was sufficiently equipped. Also, there was a swimming pool 15 mins (one bus stop) far away from our appartment. When there was a nice weather there was an opportunity to rent a bike and go for a ride along the Sava river.

Serbian culture is very rich and hospitable. We spent couple evenings in kafanas - local pubs with live local music. Also I visited some museums during my stay to get acknowledged about Serbian culture.

Food, local specialties

Food in Serbia is just amazing! Serbians eat a lot of meat. Plejskavica and cevapcici is a must when staing in Serbia. Also baklava - the dessert is awesome. During my stay I visited couple great local restaurants in Belgrade, as well as in other cities (Zlatibor and Leskovac).

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

There was a wifi at the appartment and we also got serbian SIM card which could be charged with mobile data (1GB cca 400 RSD). I was in touch with my friends and family basically every day.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Bring some warm and sport clothes. There is a lot of opportunities to hike in Serbia aswell. Be prepared that cooking opportunities in the appartment are restricted because of the occupancy. However, there is a plenty of cheap and great fast foods. Also downloading of Moovit app is great for orientation in public transportation.

What not to forget with you

Umbrella, waterproof shoes, warm clothes.

Benefits of the internship

Opportunity to travel, meet great people, eat amazing food and learn something new in my field as well as about the foreign culture.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Very good.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Totally recommended!
