About the country

Location of the place

The south-eastern part of China. Pacific wind brings a huge amount of humidity. When you will leave the airport, your first question will be: "What is it?"
Yes, it is hot. Only 30 degrees, but because of humidity, it seems like at least 40.
Surprise, but good to see.

City

Hong Kong. But I do not say "big city", I say "little country". You can find everything here. From enormous skyscrapers to small villages. From opera to lifeless barracks.
You can go hiking and see incredible nature, you can explore thousands of streets. You can fly, you can swim.
You can earn money, you can lose money.
It is strong Hong Kong.
I recommend watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyDW1rNGPU0

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

I travelled only in Hong Kong and in Macao.
But, of course, you can visit Mainland China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan.
It depends only on your wallet.

Employer

Employer

It is The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
I was happy when I understood what we have on our campus. Restaurants, sports facilities, swimming pool, library.
Writing, reading, swimming. What can be better?

Work description

I did not work with supervisor. I just helped his student on their project.
But this student had summer too, so he had not a lot of work for me. Funny guy with a spinner.
Everybody was happy, I enjoyed the holiday.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

9500HKD=26900CZK/month.
It is more than okay. Not for luxury guys, but if you are adequate, you can eat different food everyday and travel everywhere in Hong Kong.

Language requirements

Keep calm and do not be afraid.
It was enough to send them certificate B1+.
You can easily speak with everybody in university, but be ready to say: "Sorry, I don't understand you, please turn off your accent."
Yes, an accent is strong, but their emails... Their emails are grammatically very beautiful.
It is more complicated in the city because not everybody speaks English, but you will not have big problems, I promise.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

2700HKD=7600CZK/month.
It organized by the university. Rooms are cool. You have a lot of place for everything. Free internet is everywhere. You will only pay more for air condition, washing machine and drying machine. But not a lot.
And you can have problems with administration. They are strict. It is not allowed to drink there. But you can. It is okay. And why could not we play ping pong after 11 p.m.? Strange people.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

My first email from them was: "Hello, I am your buddy and I will not meet you at the airport..."
WHAT?!
I was shocked, but thanks god they prepared a table with our flights, so I could find people who I will fly with. And I found one. We had the same flight from Prague to London and from London to Hong Kong. After we bought tickets and found a bus. We had information about transport and location of the dormitory.
But after it was nice. They explained everything, we had a big meeting on campus and we got more information.
IAESTE Hong Kong organized some events, but they do not have many members. It is more like the department at the university.

Meeting other foreign students

We had a big group. Thirty people? Forty? A lot. From different countries all over the world. I am very happy that I met them. They made my holiday unforgettable. Thank you.

Sport and culture

How I said, you can find everything in Hong Kong.
We played football, tennis, squash, ping pong. I tried surfing and I swam a lot.
I recommend visiting opera. It is funny and strange.
A lot of parks and places for hiking.
So many museums. But firstly you should visit History Museum. It has 8 parts. From dinosaurs to modern Hong Kong.
If you are a party guy, visit LKF and Wan Chai.
But what can be better than drinking beer in Tsim Sha Tsui and talking with your friends?

Food, local specialties

Food in Hong Kong is incredibly diverse.
You will find so many dishes. European, Asian, Chinese kitchens. But be careful. Some Chinese stuff has a lot of bones, skin, cartilage... I will not continue.
We tried something new every day. The best was sweet and sour chicken with rice.

P.S. McDonald's is everywhere.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

I communicated with the Czech Republic only by internet. The Internet is free (in two meanings).

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Learn how to eat with chopsticks, maybe.
I do not know what to write here more.
Contact me if you have questions: https://www.facebook.com/e.shpakovskiy
I will try to help you.

What not to forget with you

Mind, umbrella and smile.

Benefits of the internship

For me, there is one big plus. I started to speak English.
But of course, I met many cool people and saw a lot.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

We had the conversation in WhatsApp. It was easy to contact them. They always tried to help me. I think it is more than enough.

Overall experience with IAESTE

It was a great experience. I will recommend to try it to my friends.
