About the country

Location of the place

Hong Kong, officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory south to Mainland China and east to Macao in East Asia.

Hong Kong is big city with more than 7 million occupants. The main part of city is north part of Hongkong island and south part of Kowloon where are mostly skyscrapers with offices and flats. Population density in these parts is incredible. Around this main parts of city are peripheral neighborhood conected with city by trains. The city have realy good public transportation based on metro lines and buses.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

In Hong Kong is a lot of places to visit. I can recommend Big Buddha, Victoria peak (not only commercial part), Lamma island, Star ferry, many temples etc. I was really surprised how much nature is around this big city. It is only few minutes by bus and you can visit some hiking trails. And alo you can visit Macau, Taiwan and other visa-free countries.

I was working at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University at the Department of Electronics and information engineering. The University campus is located in the center of the city and it is in walking distance from dormitory. I made a reaserch project for my supervisor. Mostly, I worked alone with few consultations with my supervisor.

Work description

My research project was in field of image computing in encrypted domain. In first part of my internship I found existing papers about image rescaling in encrypted domain and about image searching in encrypted domail. In second part of my intership I proposed modified method for image rescaling in encrypted domain and made demonstration in MATLAB.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

My salary was 9420 HKD but I received less money (8900 HKD) because my internship started 3 of July (not 1 of July). It was sufficient for living there, but not for traveling.

Language requirements

English is required. People at University can speak english at good level, but sometimes it can be hard to understand Chinese people speaking english. Mostly people in Hong Kong can speak English and also menues in many restaurants are in English.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I lived in students dormitory - Homantin Hall of Residencet ,it was provided to me by the University. At arrival, I paid 500 HKD as deposit and the fee for first month of accommodation. One night costs 88 HKD there. The deposit had to be paid in cash but the fee could be paid by credit card.
In dormitory are two and three beds rooms, every student has own bed, table, chair and wardrobe. During summer hilidays, dormitory was almost empty.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Three days before my departure from Prague, I received email from Hong Kong IAESTE member with information where he will wait for me and how can I get there. I took bus from the airport and met him at station without problems.
During internship, IAESTE organized for us some events as official lunch or weekend in Lantau island.

Meeting other foreign students

We all lived in students dormitory so we met everyday, were going out together for lunches and some trips.

Sport and culture

There is a gym, ping pong table, game room, dance room, piano room and snooker in the dormitory and also swimming pool in university campus. In the centre are also some theaters, cinemas and museum that it is worth to visit. Many of museums are free entrance on certain days.

Food, local specialties

In dormitory and at the University there are canteens with reasonable prices. They serve mostly local food but sometimes has european food. The restaurants in the streets are almost everywhere and you can find good prices. It is also possible to cook by yourself in dormitory, but mostly kitchens are without dishes.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

You can communicate through the internet very easily. Internet is free in the dormitory and University. You can use Facebook and Google freely as Hong Kong is not behind Great Firewall of China.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Practice eating by chopsticks before traveling to Hong Kong (in some restaurants haven't forks), buy Octopus card and local SIM card

What not to forget with you

activated carbon, umbrella, sunscreen, strepsils, hoodie (because of aircondition), something typical Czech (like Becherovka)

Benefits of the internship

Now I have many new experiences in field of image computing and image signal processing. And also I met a lot of nice people and visited interesting places

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
