Gabriela Brázdilová, CTU Prague,
ročník 3About the country
Location of the place
Gdynia is situated in the north of Poland at the shore of Baltic sea next to the other cities - Sopot and the port Gdańsk.
City
Gdynia, Sopot and Gdansk compromise one unit, they are connected by city train SKM. Gdansk is the oldest one with historical centre unfortunately partly destroyed during the WW2. It used to be an industrial area that is now converting to living a turistic place. Sopot is a target of turism with wide sand beach and a long wooden pier. Gdynia is the most modern of these three cities.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
There is a very long and narrow peninsula called Helska kosa, that is available by ferry or train from any of those three cities (Gdynia, Gdansk, Sopot). Other place worth visiting are polish cities Warsaw, Lodz, Krakow or Poznan. There is an airport in Gdansk, so it s possible to fly e.g. to Stockholm or Berlin.
Employer
Employer
architectural Studio Kwadrat - quite a big studio (about 20 employees), designing mostly the buildings in Gdansk, Sopot or Gdynia.
Work description
I started with measuring of buildings and drawing them in AutoCAD, then I helped with competion of new block of flats - figure out the layouts and draw cross sections. At the end I was making model of current building in Sketchup in cooperation with the Netherlands company.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
I was paid at the end of my intership, so I had to have more money ahead to be able live there. The salary covered all my expenses of this intership (inlcluded dormitory and trasnport), but I didn't travel around here too much. I got 2000zl/month net-income.
Language requirements
We spoke English although sometimes we used polish as well (cause as Czech I could understand something). Polish people are shy to speak English.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
I was accommodated in the dormitory of Polytechnical University in Gdansk. It cost 518zl/7weeks (~122€). I had to commute every day to Gdynia to work by SKM for 20min (it cost 88zl/month (~21€)). The way to the train station took me another 20 min on foot or 5 min by bus (public transport in Gdansk cost 47zl/30days (~11€).
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
My polish mentor was very nice, she picked me up at the bus station, took me to dormitory and my work place and helped me to buy the neccessary tickets, create bank account and buy SIM card. She always asked me, if everything is ok or if I need help with something.
On fb I could see the events of IAESTE and take part in the weekends trips to other cities (Warsaw, Lodz,...)
