About the country

Location of the place

Slovenia is a small beautiful country with really nice nature and it owns acces to the sea.

City

Ljubljana is the capital city that lies in the middle of Slovenia. It has 200,000 inhabitants, so it´s not that big, but you can find there everything you need. There is a bike rental system available in the city, where registration costs only 3 euros per year and every first hour of rental is free of charge. The bike stations are almost everywhere.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Because Slovenia is so small and Ljubljana is in the middle, it´s not a problem to go anywhere in the 1-2 hours, for example to the sea, for a hiking on the mountain, to a several caves or waterfalls.

Employer

Employer

I worked at the Institut Jožef Stefan in control systems department. The institute is a 5- minute walk from Dijaški dom Vič dormitory.

Work description

I did an optimization of plasma control in the Tokamak thermonuclear reactor.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

I´ve got 600 euros as a payment, which is enough for a living in Slovenia even when you are traveling and having fun (in pubs, clubs..).

Language requirements

There was no problem to speak in English with almost everybody.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I lived at the Dijaški Dom Vič dormitory (150 euros per month). Accommodation was provided by local IAESTE. Because there were only few people at the dormitory during the summer, I´ve got my own cooker, fridge and toaster at my room from the manager.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

At the beginning a local IAESTE member helped us with all the necessary papers. And he also organized a lot of trips for us, so we had plan for almost every day. It was really great and I visited really big part of Slovenia. We also had meetings in a pub every Tuesday with local IAESTE members and other interns.

Meeting other foreign students

There is almost no one at the dormitory where I lived during the summer, but I liked it. There is a bigger student life at Rožná dolina dormitory.

Sport and culture

During the summer there are many festivals in Ljubljana (food, theatrical, musical..) and many sports events. There was a gym in my dormitory (you have to pay some fee to use it).

Food, local specialties

Food in Slovenia is generally excellent, local specialities are čevabčiči or štrukli. For students here, they have an excellent discount system, where you can use bonis which means that your price of the food will be 2.63 euros cheaper. Only bad thing is that the boni doesn´t work from 15.7. to 15.8. .

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Through mobile, roaming is canceled in the EU, so I was able to use my data connection from Czech Republic. Otherwise there is wifi almost everywhere.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

If you can, take your own car, you can do shared trips with other interns - it´s more cheaper, and faster. Don´t forget to take equipment for hiking.

What not to forget with you

Hiking equipment, own dishes, or kitchen appliances. Everyone else is writing an umbrella, but I had the best summer I've ever experienced (it was still hot and almost it did not rain), so don´t forget the sunscreen.

Benefits of the internship

I learned a lot of new things and gaines a lot of experience that will be definetely useful. I have met a lot of great people from Slovenia and also from the other countries around the world. I´ve improved my English.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Cooperation was easy, communication mostly through Facebook. We had own group for all IAESTE interns and members.

Overall experience with IAESTE

I had no problems, everything went smoothly and I was well informed about everything.
