Sofia Orišková, Brno University of Technology,
ročník 2About the country
Location of the place
Near to Bremen and Hamburg
City
Oldenburg - a small city with beautiful nature
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
I would reccommend to visit Bremen and Hamburg. Amsterdam is also quite near :). There were trips organized by IAESTE, I would reccommend to attend.
Employer
Employer
Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg - Department of Physical Chemistry
Work description
The first month I worked with liquid liquid interface, determination of Gibbs energies, preparing solutions, voltametric measurements. The second month I learnt how to prepare microelectrodes.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
If you do not want to travel around, it is sufficient for local conditions. If you want to travel, maybe you will need some extra money.
Language requirements
English was enough for me, at the department there were lots of PhD students and post docs from abroad so I barely heard German at work. I did not have any problems outside of the university. Everybody speaks english.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
Accommodation was provided by iaeste. It was quite cheap -250 €. It was a house with 3 bedrooms, I stayed alone in my bedroom. What I did not like was that the place was dirty (from the beggining) and my room was very stinky.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
I had a pick up, there were two dinners organized by the local iaeste members. There were no other events organized by the local IAESTE members.
Meeting other foreign students
I met seven foreign students. I lived in the same house with 3 of them. We became very close. I was the only girl.
Sport and culture
The uni has some sport facilities, there is a calisthenic park. I had to ride my bike to the uni what took me about 25 min so it was enough sport for me personally.
Every week there was a concert in the city center.
Every week there was a concert in the city center.
Food, local specialties
There are good restaurants, but expensive so I cooked my own food. There is a canteen at the uni offering one vegetarian and one nonvegetarian meal. There is also a saladbar where the price depends on the weight.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
There was wifi at work and at the house I was living in, too.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Bring warm clothes, it rains a lot here . Rent a bike as soon as possible, sometimes they run out of them.
What not to forget with you
Umbrella, warm clothes
Benefits of the internship
At my department, everybody was foreigner so you really do not need to speak German. I practised my language skills and professional skills too. The working environment was really lovely. Everybody was helpful.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
The owner of the house I lived in does not speak english, so when I needed something from her, I asked the member of IAESTE to translate. I also needed some help with my salary and the lady at the foreigner students´office did not reply my email so I asked the IAESTE members to help me with that. Besides that, we were not in touch very often.
Overall experience with IAESTE
In Germany - they were always willing to help when we needed something, but they were very busy so they did not have time to spend evenings with us or have fun.
