Location of the place

Thai Nguyen city is 80 km far from Hanoi (the capital city). It is situated in North Vietnam.

City

Thai Nguyen is the capital and largest city of Thai Nguyen Province.
Population is about 330,000, it is equipped with lot of restaurants, cafes and shops.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

In North Vietnam are many beautiful places where to go. From Hanoi (80 km from Thai Nguyen city) is possible to take bus, train or flight everywhere. From Thai Nguyen city is also possible to take bus, but it is more difficult, usually you need Vietnamese friend to order place in bus, bus drivers are not speaking english.

Employer

I worked in International school in Thai Nguyen like teacher. I had teaching assistant and she helped me with everything. My boss was quite busy, but when I needed something he always managed it.

Work description

Possibility to teach on University was wonderfull. I had usually 4 lessons per week (about 8 h) and then I needed time to prepare lessons. I was also helping with preparation of special events for students like enviromental forum etc. In my work description was also meeting with English clubs in school.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

I got 2 000 000 dongs per month. My accomodation was for free and food in Vietnam is really cheap. For basic living it was enough. Not for traveling.

Language requirements

English - not so much Vietnamese people can speak good english, but everybody want to talk and do practice (young people). On street you need Vietnamese dictionary. Vietnamese language is difficult to learn.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I lived in dormitory for students. I had my own room with bathroom. My accommodation was paid by International school.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Pick-up on airport was managed by employer. In IAESTE there is one full time person. IAESTE office is in INternational school so every time when I needed to ask something it was easy for me. IAESTE also organised a lot of welcome and goodbye party, weekend trip to Ninh Binh and Tam Dao. IAESTE is very helpfull in Vietnam and work perfect.

Meeting other foreign students

During my internship time there was about 10 other trainees. Most of them was on other side of city - about 15 km far. One French girl was living with me in same dormitory and one Polish boy was living about 4 km from our dormitory. We met each other every day.

Sport and culture

I was using to travel everywhere bike (they lent me it in my work) and every weekend on trip we was climbing a lot. So I was not looking for another sport activity. In Thay Nguyen is swimming pool I know. There is also cinema. Usually we was going to cook some traditional food in friends house or we was traveling in free time. There was also some activity like Teachers day or Seminars about environment protection during evenings.

Food, local specialties

Be vegetarian in Vietnam is difficult but it is possible. They are eating a lot of different types of meat a lot of rice and vegetable. Their cusine is salty, they are not eating so much sweet like we are use to.
