About the country

Location of the place

Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland. It is situated on Northern Ireland's eastern coast.

The city has about 310,000 inhabitants. There is public transport. One-day ticket for Belfast is £3.90, for all NI £9.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Cave Hill, 13km trail from Hollywood to Bangor, Queen's Quarter, Titanic Quarter

Queen's University Belfast (QUB) and Sensum company.

Work description

I was working in a part academic part commercial environment on a project that involved the
transfer of knowledge between the School of Psychology at Queen’s University Belfast and the commercial company Sensum. The project involved the analysis of biometric signals taken from athletes and non-athletes involved in extreme sports situations.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

£268 per week. The accommodation was £101 per week. So I still had enough money for food, drinks a and trips.

Language requirements

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I was staying in students dormitory. The accommodation was £101 per week. It was provided by IAESTE. In my room I had a bed, a bedsheet, a table, a chair, a lamp, a shelf, a wardrobe, and a sink. Bathrooms, a common room and a kitchen were shared.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

One IAESTE member picked me up at the bus stop in Belfast. Every thursday there was IAESTE meeting and during the summer IAESTE members organised few trips. And all the time they advised us about some local activities, such as cimena, pubs, restaurants, place to visit etc.

Meeting other foreign students

Almost everybody was staying in the Guthrie House, so we were meeting every day.

Sport and culture

Near the accomodation there is Botanic Garden, where you can go jogging. And there is also a sport centrum. At Botanic Avenue there is a cinema, where is every thuesday ticket for £3.

Food, local specialties

Guinness, whiskey, chips, Irish stew, sausage.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

There wasn´t any problem with communication. During the first week of my stay I got a local sim card. At the accomodation we had a fast internet connection.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Go there! Belfast is really lovely city, not such expensive like Dublin and IAESTE guys are great.

What not to forget with you

Umbrella, plug reduction, rain coat, your local food for international dinner

Benefits of the internship

I improved my statistical, programming and english skills. And my employer wrote me a Letter of Recomendation.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

They were commucating with me and were really heplfull.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Everything was OK, but before I was accepted I had to fill out a lot of forms.
