Bc. Marek Šárovec, Brno University of Technology,
ročník 5About the country
Location of the place
Belgium is a country with comparable size to the Czech Republic.
City
Brussels is the capital but not the biggest city (Antwerp) of the Belgium. It is very multicultural city.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Belgium is very small country with good train and bus connections. It is very easy to travel around the country and it is not far even to France or Netherlands.
Employer
Employer
Vrije University Brussel
Work description
Topic of my internship was Condition monitoring of rotary machines so I tried to predict behaviour of gas turbine based on measured data.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
200 € per week. It was almost enough for living even to make some trips and make some party during week.
Language requirements
English on advanced level. Master's are taught in english so everyone can speak english very well. And they expect the same from you.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
I paid 300€ for room in dormitory. It was flat with 4 bedrooms and shared kitchen and bathroom. This accommodation was provided by IAESTE & big thanks to them for it, because student in Belgium are having party even more often than in CZ!
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
I arrived early in the morning so I didn't ask for pick-up. As far as I know, they organised 2 events during my stay in Brussel. I attented just one and it was great experience of belgium cheese and wine for me :)
Meeting other foreign students
Since I spend autumn in Brussel, it was over almost of all internship, cause majority of people make their internship during summer. But it wasn't issue for me cause I lived with dormitory, so I can hang out with Dutch students
Sport and culture
Sports were quite expensive, especially just for 2 month, since everywhere were high sing up fees. So I was going to the swimming pool (30€ for 10 entry) and jogging.
Food, local specialties
I think Belgium took the best food from the France, Netherlands and Italy so they offer really good cheeses, breads, wines, beers and fries of course.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Pigeons, telegraphs and similar ones :D
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
I would rather recommend you go on Intership during summer, because you will definetely meet much more international people than in autumn. But in this case you will miss the X-mas market, which is really beautiful in Brussel and I'm sure you won't meet so many Belgian people. So make your own priorities :)
What not to forget with you
Take enough money until your first salary, because you will have to pay rent, public transport etc.
Benefits of the internship
Learnt new things, met new people.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
Sufficient. They helped me find accommodation and answer all my questions.
Overall experience with IAESTE
Good!
