About the country
Location of the place
Oldenburg is located in the west Germany, 100 km north of the border to Netherlands and 60 km west of Bremen.
Oldenburg is a middle size town with about 150 000 inhabitants. Everybody has at least one bicycle and it is the reason why is there the most bicycle in Germany (maybe:). It is better and even faster to go by bike than by public transport.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Around Oldenburg is just flat land most of the area is below the sea level so you cannot expect any hills. The most wondering is a coastal area, but very rarely the water is warm enough to swim. However, you can go there and promenade or go by bike along the beaches, it is a very tourist\ area. In the sea is 7 islands, in some of them is a natural reservation, you can get there by ferry boat, but you must be aware about high and low tide. About 20 km from is the lake Zwischenahner Meer, very nice place. Furthermore, surround Oldenburg is plenty of city worst to visit like Hamburg, Bremen or Groningen in The Netherlands.
I worked for a laboratory group at the University of Oldenburg in landscape engineering. Everybody of my colleagues were very nice people and they make a perfect work ambiance.
My internship was focused on geographic engineering systems (GIS) so I worked with a computer and have made GIS analyses for the project of my colleagues. My work was to create maps or to make spatial data analyses. I had basic knowledge in GIS before my arrival, but I needed to learn a lot of at the beginning.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
It depends on the type of accommodations, it is very hard to find a place during the academic year and prices could be very high. For me, the local IAESTE found a place through AirBNB for a good price, so my salary was sufficient. Moreover, I could go to the canteen and I had a meal for student’s prices.
They had requirements only for English and it is enough to speak in English at work in the academic field. However, it would be more than useful to speak in German as well.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
Was found by local IAESTE through AirBNB. I payed 350€ a month. I had a room and I shared a bathroom and a kitchen with another AirBNB guest.
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
Very nice people were in local IAESTE. They helped me with my arrival and help me to organise my stuff. They organised some events as well.
Meeting other foreign students
During my stay another student from India was in the city. I met her thanks IAESTE event. I have been a member of foreign students on the facebook, but I have never met them.
Sport and culture
At the university is plenty of possibility to do whatever you want to. Swimming, basketball, climbing, etc. It would be free if you have a student card.
Food, local specialties
Food is very similar to the Czech kitchen. I would say local sausages like a specialty.
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Without any problems, internet, roaming.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Take your own city bike or buy one after your arrival . Otherwise, no special recommendations.
What not to forget with you
Benefits of the internship
I have improved my skills in GIS and in general programming significantly. I have learned another point of view in landscape Engineering. Really very good experience!
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
Cooperation was without any problem.
Overall experience with IAESTE
I have just a good experience with IAESTE.
