About the country

Location of the place

Macedonia is a beautiful country which I would recomend to visit, there is a lot of mountains for hiking and hot weather during summer.

City

Bitola is the second biggest city in Macedonia with 200 000 habitants but there is almost nothing to do during the working week. There is cinema, swimming pool and a lot of cafes and restaurants. In the valley where Bitola is, is very strong air pollution which causes difficulty in breathing.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Bitola is under beautiful National Park Pelister with unique pine Molika. Town and lake Ohrid is not far away. Very nice is town Krushevo in 1350 meters above sea level. And there are one day trips to sea in Greece on weekends.

Employer

JP Makedonski Sumi is managing forests in Macedonia. Supervisor in Bitola is great and she does everything for that her intern enjoyes stay in Bitola.

Work description

The internship is described as field work but there were some problems with transportation and I wasn't doing any field work, I was going every day to the office.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

Salary was 3250 MKD which is sufficient for accomodation, food and drinks during the week but not for organised weekends or any other traveling.

Language requirements

English and it's good to know cyrilic alphabet and some other Slavic language

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Accomodation was provided by IAESTE LC Bitola. We were 3 students and we were sharing one small flat in very nice house. There were two rooms one for boys and one for me as a girl (for last 10 days of my internship arrived second girl with which I shared the room) but we shared a bathroom and a kitchen. The entrance to the kitchen was possible only throw one room.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I arrived few hours earlier than I supposed so I had to take a taxi and get to the accomodation by myself, at the accomodation other foreign students welcomed me.
In general organization in Macedonia doesn't exist, nobody can't plan anything in detail in advance. Weekends were organised by LC Skopje togehter with other foreign students but almost on every weekend someethnig didn't work and a solution wasn't really appropriate.

Meeting other foreign students

Meeting other foreign students was perfect, there were students from all over the world.

Sport and culture

In Bitola is National Park Pelister, gym with very good price, few cultural actions were in Bitola during summer - films in english, concerts.

Food, local specialties

Food is very cheap, very good but very fatty. Burek and pljeskavica are the best food in Balkan area.

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Wifi access is in accomodation and in all restaurants.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

I would recomend to brign some work to do because there is a lot of free time.

What not to forget with you

Enough money, I spent 200 eur before I got payed.

Benefits of the internship

Now I know very good macedonian culture and way of life and I'm realy relaxed.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Cooperation with IAESTE in Macedonia was sometimes a little bit difficult because macedonian people are too spontaneous and almost nothing is planned in advance.
