About the country

Location of the place

Krakow is 5-6 hours far from Prague by bus or train. Situated on the Vistula River in the Lesser Poland region.

City

Krakow is the second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland. City with beautiful old town, many interesting museums and full of bars, cafes and restaurants.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Interesting trips are salt mines Wieliczka, Auschwitz concentration camp and Ojców National Park.

Employer

Employer

I was a member of team of 6 people. Not all of them speak English but they were kind and nice to me.
My boss was patient and his English was really good but I think that he sometimes did not know what to do with me. I was there during vacation time, so it was not season for measurements in field. Maybe different timing of internship would be better.

Work description

Get to know with problematics of vibrations and with their influence on building structures and people inside of them. Learn something about sensors, which they use and then make a calibration of them. Work with programs which are used for evaluation of vibration influence on building structures and people inside them.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

I think Krakow is cheaper city than Prague for example but salary was not sufficient. If you like delicious meal and drinks or enjoy your stay with friends, salary can not be sufficient.
It is good to mention that I did not get my salary during my stay in Krakow but after my internship.

Language requirements

The first week I learnt lots of new words because my technical English was little bit poor but at the end I did not have a problem with language.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I was the first trainee in Krakow, so I had advantage and I got room with bathroom and small kitchen just for my self. It was 15-20 minutes far from my workplace.
Price - 460 zl/month + electricity, provided by polish IAESTE

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Polish members of IAESTE are really nice and helpful. One girl picked me up my first day at the bus station and showed me accomodation and neighborhood. They organized trips to Wroclaw and Gdańsk and of course some pub crawls in Krakow.

Meeting other foreign students

I think first two weeks I was the only one trainee in Krakow and unfortunately polish students had an exam period, so it was not easy to make new friends quickly. But then new trainees started coming to Krakow and because we lived at same place it was easy to meet and I made great new friends.

Sport and culture

There were university gym and also bicycle track, located close to our dormitory.
In the old town it is possible to visit some free guided tours, where you can find out more the city. Krakow is alive at every hour during day and also night. During my stay I visited festival of music and festival of theatres.

Food, local specialties

It is necessary to try so much pierogi how you can. You can choose these dumplings with meat, with fruits or with everything what you want. They have also delicious soups and meat.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Communication with Czech republic totally without problem via skype or phone.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

To have enough money because I got salary after my 6 week practise. From my experience Polish people in shop or restaurant do not like speak in English or they can not. I am not sure. So, I was realy glad that we have so similar languages and I managed many things in czech language.

What not to forget with you

Surprisingly do not forget umbrella and warmer clothes despite of your internship is during summer. Weather is changing all the time.

Benefits of the internship

I practised my English, I met interesting new people and I had the opportunity to observe people in practise.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Good cooperation

Overall experience with IAESTE

Good experience
