About the country
Location of the place
City of Rzeszow is located in southeastern Poland on the Vislok river. It is located about 100 km from the Slovak and also Ukrainian border. South of the city lie Carpathian Mountains.
It is a relatively young city with a population around 190,000 inhabitants. So there is not a lot of historical monuments (expect city center), but even so, the city has much to offer.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Near Rzeszow are several monuments which are worth visiting. Krakow is the most important of these 150 km far away with very good bus connections. Other examples are the cities of Tarnow and Przemysl with its adjacent fortresses. The city of Lviv is also nice to visit, but which is in Ukraine, outside the Schengen area.
I have worked at Rzeszow University of Technology, Department of Building Structures.
I have been participated on research of joints of steel structures. Especially I focused on initial rotational stiffness of beam-to-column and beam-to-beam joints according to EC3. Marginally I also participated in laboratory tests of concrete beams with atypical reinforcement.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
My salary was 1000 PLN per month, it means 1500 PLN for the internship period. It was quite sufficient for local conditions.
I had to speak English at level 2. Knowledge of Dutch language was an advantage, but I did not need it. In my work, I have used also German language slightly.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
I have paid 450 PLN per month. I have lived in single-room at dorminitory of Rzeszow University of Technology. The distance between my dormitory and my work place was 100 m.
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
One IAESTE member picked me up at the railway station when I came to Rzeszow. I was out with IAESTE members three times. Once I participated in an information meeting for students who want to go on internships next year.
Meeting other foreign students
I have worked with one other foreign student. In the time when I was at the intership there were two more students via IAESTE.
Sport and culture
I did not use any sport or cultural opportunities. Downstairs at my dormitory is a weight room. Near to campus is a cinema.
Food, local specialties
Around my dormitory there were many shops and bistro. Next to my room is a kitchen.
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
I have used facebook and mobile phone for communications. Mobile tariffs are very cheap in Poland.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
It is good to bring some basic cookware. Dormitory kitchens are not equipped with it.
What not to forget with you
Everything for every-day life is available there.
Benefits of the internship
I could use my knowledges from school in my work at the internship. I have seen another university and met new people. IAESTE members in Rzeszow are very kind people.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
I am not a member of IAESTE so I have cooperated only as participant of the internship (see above).
Overall experience with IAESTE
Kind people, personal approach, but a lot of paperwork
