Location of the place

Lodz is taking place in the centre part of Poland.

City

Lodz is third biggest city of Poland. It is known for its manufacturing history, now shopping and culture centre Manufaktura and Piotrkowska street.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

You can find many and many beautiful parks in Lodz, also ZOO garden, botanical garden, as I mentioned Piotrkowska street, Manufaktura and a lot of muzeums. The position of Lodz is great for weekend trips. I have been in Wroclaw, Gdansk and Warsawa (all of them were IAESTE weekends) and I used PolskiBus.

Work description

Lab work on interactions between dendrimers and other nanoparticles with biomolecules. Experimental techniques: fluorimetry, zeta potential, DLS and electrophoresis

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

800 PLN/month, I think it was enough but I had prepared money for whole internship in case of some problems so I can´t say.

Language requirements

English good or russian good. Absolutely no language problems. We were speaking mostly in english but sometimes we used polish or czech words.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

We lived at Hostel Molo, little bit far away from the university departments. We had to use public transporation or public bikes. Accomodation was provided by LC University of Lodz. Price was very friendly - 113,5 PLN for six weeks.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I met IAESTE University of Lodz members twice - first day and evening and at bank where we got money.
Others I met at IAESTE weekends or evening events at Lodz.

Meeting other foreign students

At IAESTE weekend events and evening events in Lodz, I can say - often :-)

Sport and culture

Lodz is perfect place for jogging (or just walking) and cycling. We didn't use any playground for sports.
Culture - street art is everywhere, street artists too. We went to Festival Kolorow in Lodz (very nice event and for free).

Food, local specialties

Pierogy, lody (ice-cream), bajadery (dessert), zurek (sour soup), bigos (sour cabbage with mushrooms and kielbasa and meat), nalesniki (pancakes), polish beers and alcoholic drinks (Soplica, Zubrowka, ...)

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

I used polish sim card, so I had to communicate with my family by Skype, Messenger and post :-).

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

It is neccesary to have polish sim card (all of our group used PLAY operator, so we had calls and sms for free). You can get monthly ticket for public transportation (called MIGAWKA, 40 PLN per month) or you can register to Lodzki Rower for 20 PLN and then you can use public bikes (30 minutes for free, then 1 PLN, 2 PLN and so on).

What not to forget with you

I recommend to bring phone for two sim cards or some older one just in case. Bring also extension cord and cable for internet connection. I also strongly reccomend to bring your own dishes and cutlery (we bought in Lodz some pots and shared the using together).
Also be sure that your credit card is valid in Poland, you can use it almost everywhere.
