Bc. Martin Hošek, Brno University of Technology,
ročník 3About the country
Location of the place
Minsk is situated in the middle of the Belarus. Belarus is in the Eastern Europe.
City
Minsk is the capital city of Belarus. It has 1.9 million inhabitants.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Minsk Sea is close to the city. It takes just about 20 minutes by train to go there.
Employer
Employer
Belarusian state university - It is situated in the city centre just 15 - 20 minutes of walk from dormitories.
Work description
At first I read something about semiconductor lasers and after that there was some laboratory work to obtain hands-on experiences. Finally I had to made report of my laboratory work.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
178 BYR (80 EUR). It wasn't sufficient at all. In the "acceptance note" was written that I will obtain 250 BYR per month and finally for 30 days of my staying in Minsk I obtain just 178 BYR.
Language requirements
Only English was required but I really recommend learn Russian because almost no one out of the university is able to speak English.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
Accommodation was provided by university and was for free. The quality of accommodation was very bad so I don't recommend choose it.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
One PhD. student picked me up at the airport and helped my with everything I needed to arrange.
Meeting other foreign students
I wasn't able to communicate with almost no one at the dormitories because they didn't know English.
Sport and culture
All cinemas are in Russian. There is a football stadium close to the dormitories but it was under the reconstruction.
Food, local specialties
Many meals are from potatoes.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Internet connection was available at the university and I paid 8 BYR for internet connection (25 GB) at the dormitories.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
I really recommend learn Russian language. As I mention before almost no one out of the university is able to speak English. I recommend arrange accommodation out of the dormitories.
What not to forget with you
There weren’t dishes at dormitories at all. So I recommend take at least some dishes.
Benefits of the internship
I learnt in more details how the laser works. It is also beneficial for man to see how people live in the poorer country that is his native country.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
They help me with Visa and with problems I have during my internship.
Overall experience with IAESTE
It's great experience to work in the foreign country but I think there are better countries that Belarusia.
