Bc. Jan Ficek, Brno University of Technology,
ročník 4About the country
Location of the place
The place of my internship was in Zurich in Switzerland. The country with beautiful mountains and lakes with stunning places which you cannot find anywhere else on the world.
City
Zurich is a metropole compared with other cities in the Switzerland – it is very fast and precise with the biggest banks and rich companies, city with a long history and wide historical city parts. You can also find there ETH, the 9th most prestige university on the world.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
IAESTE LC Zurich is very active in organising weekend trips all over the Switzerland. Therefor it was possible to travel every weekend to another part of Switzerland and explore its beauty. Also if the event was full, it was possible just to go to the lake or select random mountain and hike it with friends. The conclusion is, there are infinite possibilities to travel and explore that beautiful country.

Employer
FKH is a company which does measurements in high voltage networks. They treat with “ordinary” measurements such as partial discharge, grounding or electro-magnetic field measurements on the cables, high voltage networks, substations and power plants. But there are also special tasks like measurements in airplane companies, measurements on the Tokamak or in CERN.
FKH has long history - it was established after 2nd WW and they are really good and precise at measurements they do.

Work description

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
I was very satisfied with my salary and if you don’t waste your money, you can make pretty good savings (I travelled quite a lot, but with Gleis 7 it would be much better)
Language requirements
English and German was required, but mostly I spoke in English language – all of the trainees and young people in Zurich speak English but in the company, I tried to speak and understand Swiss German but it was pretty hard. With my supervisor it was faster to communicate in English.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
I lived in the very nice apartment close to Schwamendingenplatz – I had 2 studying and working flatmates and my own big room. The apartment was very comfortable and well equipped with everything I needed. I was very satisfied with the price (640 CHF/month) and also very lucky that Patrick (my tutor) found it, thanks buddy.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
My tutor Patrick helped me very much the first day in Zurich – obtaining city transportation card, sim card, he showed me the city and the lake. But I was absolutely independent with going to my apartment and 2nd day to the office.
Meeting other foreign students
Every Thursday was IAESTE weekly meeting and every weekend was some special event, so absolutely no problem with meeting new faces and making new friends. Average number of trainees on meetings or weekends in the range of 20-40.
Sport and culture
Sport: jogging through the Zurichberg, swimming in the Zurich lake, drinking beer, chilling…
Culture: Museums and other places visited during IAESTE weekends

Food, local specialties
I mostly cooked for myself, because buying prepared food was needless and very expensive.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
There were some trainees from CZE or SK so it was possible to meet by the lake and enjoy Czech language. But communication diretly with Czech Republic through internet – skype, FB, emails...
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Just be polite, quick and precise. They will be also polite and very nice to you in return. And buy GLEIS 7, I made a huge mistake not buying it. Really, it is worth also for 2 months if you go to Geneva, Ticino, Bern…
What not to forget with you
Adapter to Swiss plugs! Also good hiking shoes and equipment, rain coat or waterproof jacket, umbrella – it rains quite lot, one bag full of money, alcohol from your country - it is sometimes forgotten.
Benefits of the internship
You meet a lot of new young people and make a lot of friends. Sure it is about experience in the company and you can also earn pretty good money.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
No special cooperation - IAESTE meetings, weekend events...
Overall experience with IAESTE
Perfect, thanks for everything!
