Location of the place

Dresden is the capital of Saxony, one of Federal Republic of Germany. City is placed in the middle of this Republic on river Elbe. Saxony belongs to east Germany and has borders with Czech Republic and Poland. Perfect transport connection makes Dresden good available. Just 2 hours from Berlin or Prague by bus, car or train. As well, Dresden has international airport.

The city is divided in two parts "Altstadt" and "Neustadt".

Altsdatd has old centre with most of historical sights. Churches, museums, theater, sculpture and city fortification are here.
Neustadt is modern part. Bars, clubs, cinemas, all you can find here.

City is very large and long way is to go everywhere. Travel is fast and easy thanks perfect public transport system.

Work description

Analysis of materials usable for the production of moulds.

My supervisor gave me choice to choose a topic. I chose the Analysis of materials for the production of moulds. I searched for information about materials. I chose three usable materials and I made test samples. I analyzed the mechanical properties of these samples. I made also one demo mould and tested its functionality. In the end, I wrote the report.
Totally independent work, I worked on things that I liked.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

650 € per month - sufficient for everything - food, public transport, traveling, cultural live and a few beers. !I did not pay accommodation! But I believe that salary is enough even for this.

Language requirements

English at the University + German, Polish and Czech (Saxony is region on borders)

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I have arranged accommodation with family friends. It was in the city district Klotzsche. Very nice place.

But also, IAESTE Dresden offered me an accommodation in hall of residence.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Communication is perfect with members of IAESTE Dresden. Members waited for me upon arrival. They helped me with all documents, they showed me some interesting places in Dresden and they helped me also to manage public transportation card.

Meeting other foreign students

I was the only intern during my stay in Dresden. Bad timing, but lots of my friends arrived and we did some hiking every weekend.

Sport and culture

I lived in the northern part of the city. Great Forest "Heide" was close. I regularly went there to run. It's also a great place for bike and hiking.

I do orienteering and I met orienteering runners when I ran in the Heide one day. I have spoken with them few minutes. They invited me to a race. They held this race every last Wednesday of the month and the race is for public. Here are more informations http://ol-in-dresden.de/

Perfect are beaches along the river Elbe. Here, you can do anything! Run, ride a bike, ride on in-line skates, play football and volleyball, grill, take some beers and relax.

For culture, I went to the cinema "Schauburg" in Neustadt. Nice place with a good atmosphere.

Food, local specialties

Food from store is same as anywhere.
"Brezel" is good to taste on street. Brezel with butter and chives ;-)

Who likes müsli for breakfast, he must go to Aldi market. I enclose a photo. It makes every morning gorgeous! :-)

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Smart phone with a SIM card. 15 € / month Aldi Talk operator (Aldi), Skype, email

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

To buy bike in summer :-)

What not to forget with you

Everything is in German.

Benefits of the internship

I learned to work independently. I tried interesting work, what could be my future work. I gained a lot of important contacts throughout Europe. I improved my communication in a foreign language. I knew life in foreign country and foreign city.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Very easy cooperation with IAESTE. Fast communication through email or phone and IAESTE members helped me with any problem.

Overall experience with IAESTE

IAESTE members are great anywhere in the world. They have something in common - willingness and diligence. IAESTE is perfect. I wish IAESTE long time existence.
