ročník 5About the country
Location of the place
IAESTE in Bangladesh is represented by one person Mehedi Hasan. The accommodation is in hostel which is like second campus of College. One social room where you can spend time with another members. The College is situated very close in new city district Uttara. It is very nice place comparable to Europe. So you live in Dhaka(Uttara), but old Dhaka is much worse than Uttara and it is like another world. On the street in front of hostel you can take very easy riksa.
City
Dhaka city, capital city of Bangladesh, most polluted city on the world, which was on international level chosen like the worst city for live on the world. In old Dhaka is everything very dirty, hygiene is unknown word here. But I like the chaos, thousands of riksa and scratched buses. And of course more then ten milion people (but maybe more, government doesn't know the exact number).
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
In Bangladesh are enough of possible trips, you can visit Old Dhaka where are many interesting sightseeing. In the Sylhet division you can find tea estates which are pretty nice and very green. Cox Bazar is the longest beach on the world; 125km of sand with millions red crabs. The southernmost Bangla island is Saint Martin, on this island everything looks like in Caribic. The Sundarban forest is the biggest mangrove forest on the world and there live Bengal tiger. In the forest we found some footprints from tiger = big adventure.
Employer
Employer
The College of Aviation Technology is small college with approximately 70 students. We met only our boss and Mehedi form IAESTE. We were in the College only few-times; usually for presentation another foreign students with local profesor.
Work description
Unfortunately there is nothing to do because after arrival you get the project with flexible topic, so you can write about what do you want. It is no complicated and you can do it one week. And then just travel and discover this country.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
Monthly salary is 5000 Taka. With this amount we could be on trip 5 days or stay in the capital city in the hostel for two weeks. 1 Euro is around 85 Taka. One lunch costs 50-250 Taka. You can find street breakfast for 30 Taka. Street-tea is for 5 Taka.
Language requirements
English is necessary, but the difficulty isn't high. We spent time together with guys from Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Japan and Spain. I spoke also sometimes in German.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
We lived in hostel. This hostel is like second campus from College. Rooms are small, clean and simple. Most of the time we were together in social room.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
IAESTE is represented by MEHEDI HASAN. This man can manage everything what you need. He also picked-up me at the airport and organised meetings with profesor. He is also student from College and perhaps the only man which can communicate fluent English.
Meeting other foreign students
We were with other foreign students all the time. We were travelling together and for me this was extreme interesting to be all the time in international collective.
Sport and culture
You can go to the cinema on Bangla movie, watch the cricket match or go to the gym.
Food, local specialties
All food is very spicy and hot. Rice is usually in every restaurant, NAN (local bread) is available only for dinner. Hygiene is unknown word, you must use your hands for eat.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Internet is very slow compare with our standards. 1 minute call to Europe costs 22 Taka = cca 7 Kč. Send one postcard is for 30 Taka.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Don't go on the same place if you are interested about aviation technology, go there if you like an adventure and you can be satisfied only with dirty bed and tap water.
What not to forget with you
Don't forget good temper and smile. Bangla people are very friendly and europe students are for them very attractive (for short conversation or SELFIE)
Benefits of the internship
Possibilities to stay three months in Asia and discover "another world". Of course the level of English rise up.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
Our only cooperation was with Mehedi Hasan.
Overall experience with IAESTE
I can only recommend to go on internship and Bangladesh was the best choice.
