About the country

Location of the place

Ghana is located along the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean, in the subregion of West Africa. Spanning a land mass of 238,535 km2, Ghana is bordered by the Ivory Coast in the west, Burkina Faso in the north, Togo in the east and the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean in the south.

Accra is the capital and largest city of Ghana, with an estimated urban population of 2.27 million as of 2012.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Accra like city cant provide some good trips. But Ghana like country is very good for travelling. There are so kind people, that they can help with everything.

My employer was Fekams construction.
Webpage here -

FEKAMS Specializes in Bituminous Sealing Works, Pothole Patching and Drains Construction and has over the years distinguished itself in these areas.

Work description

It very important, who is your boss. My boss was Felix Ankomah. Very young and ambitios man. I worked with him almost all time.

I work like Project Manager, Production Control Manager. Its means creating schedules of project, creating of budgets and quality control of execution of works.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

My salary was 150 Ghana Cedi per month. But it is not enought for living cost in Ghana!!!
I spent 3 485 Ghana Cedi for my 62 days.

But I travelled almost every weekend. And I spent lot of many for beers...

Language requirements

The official language is English. Every body here can speak English. But is little bit different English, than here in Europe.

When I arrived to Accra, it was very difficult to speak local English here. But after two weeks I got used to.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I lived in family house. It was probably 20m2 room, but this room was for 6 people. There was two similar rooms. So it is 12 people. It is a lot of people and i think it was problem, because our hostmum was little bit out of mood.

Price for accommodation was 100 Ghana Cedi per week.
In external hotels and hostels we paid about 25 Ghana Cedi per night.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

It wasnt so good. One other treinee pick me up from the airport. I met one guy from IAESTE Ghana only two times per my internship.
They organise some trips, but almost every trip was very expensive a I did some trips without IAESTE and i think, that i save a lot of many.

Meeting other foreign students

Lot of Germans. About 70% foreign student here was Germans. But i met some people from Spain, Poland, China, Italien. So i can say that my internship was international.

Sport and culture

Culture in Ghana is so different then here in Czech republic. But you have to try it. I cannt say it.
A can say only this - lot of people is so scary from trip to Ghana. But dont belive them. It is not true. I never met more kind people than in Ghana.

Food, local specialties

People in Ghana eat only one or two dishes per day.

Kind of food - Yams, sweet potatos, rice, jallof rice, plantains,
Meat: chicken, goats, fish
Fruit: The best fruit, which i tried ever. Mango, pineapples, bananas.
Everywhere is very spiced sauce. Everythnig is so spiced.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

You can communicate with yours home via internet. Internet here is very cheap. 1.5Gb of internet cost 20 Ghana Cedi.

So you call via skype, messages via whats up, facebook.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

I cannt recommend Fekams company. But i can recomend Felix like a boss for sure. Definitely. You have to have very luck to get good internship. I met 30 interns here. I was in 5 interns, who had very good work. The others had very bad work, for example - they came to work, sit in the chair and looking from the window. And thats it.

What not to forget with you

Nothing. Maybe some small present for children. But you can buy everithnig in local shops.

Benefits of the internship

I got great experience. You know, after your internship, You will be happy for your country. Because I think, that i spend great two monts here, but i cannt imagine spent here for example half of year.
great work experience, huge projects, nice and super helpful people and an unforgettable experience.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

I didnt like it. In Czech republic, we have so different cooperation with trainees.

Overall experience with IAESTE

I am from IAESTE, so i liked it!
