Location of the place

Austria is pretty country with a lot of cities to visit and beautiful nature. Multiple places to visit.

City

Graz belongs to the second biggest city in Austria. In the middle of Graz you can find high hill with a clock on it called Schlossberg giving amazing view over the whole city. Also University of Graz is one of the biggest in Austria so there are lot of places and pubs for students to visit.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

During the summer there is a possibility to buy a travelcard for unlimited train traveling so its possible to visit almost everything for a cheap price!

Work description

Rewriting MATLAB code into C/C++ code in order to optimize the calculations.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

Around 1100 euro without taxes. Accommodation costs 265 per month, food around 12 euro per day. I was left aprox with 400 euro per month for other spendins (Weekend challenges, drinking and so on)

Language requirements

Excelent english or good german.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Ordinary students dormitoty. Two people in one room with bathroom. Big kitchen was used by the whole floor and well equipped. Rooms were cleaned two days in the week by the cleaning lady.

Price was 265 per month and the accomodation was provided by IAESTE Graz.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Amazing! IAESTE members in Graz are very well organised, friendly and profesional. The first day I was picked up by one of the members and he showed me around the Graz.
During the summer IAESTE members created multiple events for us for example casino, billiard, pizza dinner or fun night with them in IAESTE office.
In general I could always ask for help and they were very keen to help me with anything.

Meeting other foreign students

Second day I was introduced to other trainees living in dormitory and spend with them almost every day. Everybody was from different country so it was really interesting meeting with other cultures and opinions. They will become your friends, your family for the whole internship.

Sport and culture

Many events is occuring in Graz during summer. From salsa dancing to underwater rugby.
As a trainees we mostly created our own sport or culture activities if there was no other happening. Graz is called students city so there are lot of places to hang around and have a good time.

Food, local specialties

All of the typical Austrian food could be found: Leberkase, WienerSchnitzel, Wursts and much more! But for them you have to visit local restaurants. In my case I was mostly eating in company canteen during the week for nice price and typical Austrian food. Otherwise I was cooking for myself. All of the common groceries could be easily bought in local supermarkets.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Its super close so I guess no problem. During the whole summer I just communicated via internet with my family. There was no need to travel back home neither calling IAESTE in Czech. Everything was allright.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Buy a bike! You will save a lot of money for tranportation in the city.
Also buing the Summerticket will grant you unlimited travelling possibilities because you will have all the trains in Austria for free.

What not to forget with you

Everything could be bought in case of the need for reasonable price in local shops.
Some dishes and cooking tool is always good to have with you.
If you will be traveling or doing hiking in Austria you will probably need some outdoor outfit for it, Austria provides a lot of mountain experience.

Benefits of the internship

Lot of friends, memories, experience in my field of study.

In the beginning of my intership I was not very social. After one week it completely changed. You will be thrown in the new area with the new people with the same attitude as you have. There was no day I spend on my room. Everytime I wanted to do something there was always somebody you can go with so you have to try really hard to feel lonely and sad.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

IAESTE Graz is full of experienced and friendly people. If there would be any problem or misunderstanding, they will definitely help you with it.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Amazing group that makes my life different, better. Because of this unique experience I have decided to join IAESTE group and help other people having amazing summer as I did.
