ročník 4About the country
Location of the place
Belfast is at the east coast of Northern Ireland. It's a part of United Kingdom.
City
It's really nice, clean city with lot of parks, coffee shops and extremely kind people. It can be dangerous during special holidays because of their religious issues but I felt actually safer than back home.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Nature in Northern Ireland is something everyone should see. It's so beautiful, green grass, trees everywhere so I highly recommend to travel! It's easy to go to Dublin, Giant's Crossway, Bushmills destillery, by the steps of Game of thrones and so on.
Employer
Employer
Queen's University of Belfast - QUILL - everything went well. Communication was good, even before I came. I've got all the maps and study materials I needed there. No problem :).
Work description
I was working in organic chemistry lab, making research about Ionic liquids. My boss gave me a project and I worked on it all ten weeks. He was really kind and willing to help with everything. I have gained some knowledge, especially about Nuclear magnetic resonance.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
It was perfectly sufficient also for all the trips I made. But I was cooking by myself - eating out is quite expensive over there.
Language requirements
Excellent English - I've been in United States before, so it took me a while get to used to their accent. But I worked with two french trainees, they spoke really bad and survived anyway, so don't worry.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
Queen's accommodation - 90GBP per week - quite a lot but the great thing was to be together with all the other trainees, so at the end it wa worth it. BUT accommodation there is possible only till 31st of August and then I had to find a hostel. So if you can, go to Belfast only till 31st of August.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
IAESTE member picked me up at the bus station from airport. They organised lot of events, trips and took care of us.
Meeting other foreign students
I think that was the best thing! I found so many new great friends from different countries that I don't even have a time to stay in touch with all of them :).
Sport and culture
As I said, there are really nice parks, so I enjoyed running over there. It's also possible to use swimming pool over there but membership to other Queen's sport facilities is really expensive. So I found special workout over there - COBRA FIT. It was really awesome, and if you go to Belfast, you should try it at least one time :-P
Food, local specialties
They eat chips with everything, so there is not really healthy lifestyle but you can find everything you like overe there. Special is definitelly whiskey but I guess that's obvious.
