Bc. Antónia Pohanková, CTU Prague,
ročník --About the country
Location of the place
Malta is a small island with beautiful architecture and its historical value. The nature is just fields with couple houses, they said they have rabits (I did not see any of them). There are many places to visit.
City
Floriana is one of the cities in Malta. To be honest, for me Malta seemed more like one big city. There is no field in between cities, so you can not be sure when you enter another one. Floriana is located next to the capital of Malta - Valletta. The city is really accessible from anywhere by public transport system of Malta.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
To travel in Malta is really easy by public transport system (if the bus comes). There are many interesting places to visit from historical cities to beautiful cliffs. All of the sand beaches are usually crowded. On the other hand, stone ones used to be empty and water was much more clear.
There is possibility to take a ferry to another islands - Gozo and Comino. Comino is in between Malta and Gozo and its known for Blue Lagune. Gozo is a bit further and the best place to visit is Azure window.
Be aware of public transport - they use air-conditioning inside the buses and it was usually too cold. Buses were always late and crowded (or did not arrive at all).

Employer
Employer
My employer was Restoration directorate, Government of Malta.
Work description
My job consisted of designing of an extension of one historical building located in Valletta. In the beginning I had to go couple times to building site to see the possibilities of this project. I was creating floorplans, deciding about what parts will remain, what will be destroyed during reconstruction. Basically, they let me decide almost about everything.
I had couple presentation for my boss and also for the government.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
I earned 650€ for 4 weeks and I would say it was enough. I was able to pay my flight tickets, trips, accommodation, parties and food without trying to save some money.
Language requirements
The language requirements for this job offer was english-good. From my point of view, it is better to speak fluently, as they asked me couple times to make a presentation without any time to prepare.
However, there is no need to know technical vocabulary very well.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)
My accommodation was located in the city Msida, one hour to walk to my job, 10 minutes by bus. The price of accommodation was 50€ per week (everything included). I asked for accommodation after I received my enrollment letter.
I was living with another three international students in three room spacious apartment. There were two bathrooms and also washing machine.

Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
The pick up at the airport was a bit chaotic. After I landed I still did not have any information who will pick me up. After couple minutes they send me a message and one IAESTE member was already waiting for me and took me by car straightly to my apartment.
The events organised by IAESTE were really nice, besides official ones every monday we had couple events during weekends. They always tried to go on trip with us, to show us the best of Malta.
In my opinion, IAESTE people from Malta did their best to make us feel comfortable and to enjoy our time there.

Meeting other foreign students
THe meeting of other students was easy, as we had official meeting from IAESTE every week. Besides that, we met also other students on their internships who did not arrived through IAESTE.
All of the students were really friendly and always helpfull.

Our cultural program consested manily of going to the fiests - they have a lot of them in Malta.

Food, local specialties
Food in Malta is quite different from my country. I fell in love with their traditional pastici - small bread fulfilled with cheese or beans. The second most favourite was "a rmet" - sweet bread. When we went on a trip, we used to buy small piece of pizza - tastefull and really cheap compare to our country.
The most traditional food is rabitt, which I did not have any chance to try.

Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
I did not need to communicate with the Czhech IAESTE during my internship, as I did not have any problems.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
The weather is really hot, so I would recommend to take a lot of shorts, sweaters are not needed at all. The sun is much stronger than we are used to, I got burned in first days after using factor 30 so I had to buy 50 later - take strong sunblock with you!!!
What not to forget with you
Sunblock
Benefits of the internship
I learnt a lot about their traditional buildings, about restorations and reconstructions. I was able to see the restoration of the fortification and try it myself.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
Without any problem.
Overall experience with IAESTE
Good organisation.
