Bc. Veronika Palanová, Brno University of Technology,
ročník 4About the country
Location of the place
My traineeship took place in Poland, Lodz.
City
Lodz is located in the centre of Poland, so if you would like to travel it is a great opportunity. At first I was a little bit disappointed about the city, but anyway, if you spent your time with the right people everything is OK.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
As I said, Lodz is in very centre of Poland so you are able to travel all Poland and of course there is also possibility to go and visit other european places. I recommend Gdansk and Krakow.
Employer
Employer
Medical University of Lodz, Department of Comparative Endocrinology.
Work description
I was involved in laboratory work on several scientific projects in the area of cancer research. I participated in experiments utilizing molecular biology techniques (electrophoresis, Real-time PCR, cancer cell line culture, BrdU, mass spectrometry, Western blotting).
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
The salary was not really sufficient. Instead of 1000 zloty, the University payed me less. Another disadvantage was that they payed us after 30 days we left.
Language requirements
B1-B2 was enough.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
The accommodation was very poor. I did not expect anything special, but the conditions of living were not very good. There was a huge mould in the bathroom. Before lodging the room was not prepared and cleaned. I had to change the room after one week. The accommodation was provided by the host university.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
The host committee of Lodz was not so good. They did not prepare anything for me and other trainees. In general, we met them once, they did not care about us. There was only one girl from the host committee who I spent my spare time with and who picked me up from the station. On the other hand, I participated on two Summer Receptions, one in Gdansk and another one in Poznan. These weekends were perfect, I had great times. I met lot of people and I knew places.
Meeting other foreign students
Our group of trainees was wonderful, I like all of them. We spent all the time together, doing crazy things, eating great food, drinking nutella shots, ...
Sport and culture
I did not practise any sport. Even you think there is a lot of time, in general, I did not have time. On the other hand, we went sightseeing very often and we visited a lot of interesting places.
Food, local specialties
I tried sour cabbage in bread and pirogy. It was special, but OK. :-)
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
I did not communicate with Czech Republic during my traineeship.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
I would recommend you to go and see Manufaktura, Piotrkowska, mirror houses, city beach... Try food and drinks of course.
What not to forget with you
Do not forget to take beddings and pots with you, so you can cook and eat. And do not forget to take money with you :-)
Benefits of the internship
New amazing people, new wonderful places, new work experiences :-)
