Dipl.-Ing. Verena Giel, CTU Prague,
ročník 2About the country
Location of the place
The internship took place in Austria.
City
The city of the internship was Vienna.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Around Vienna, there are a lot of other cities to visit, e.g. Linz, Graz, Hallstatt, Wachau, Salzburg, Klagenfurt, Innsbruck, etc. Furthermore, Bratislava and Budapest as well as Maribor and Ljubiljana is nearby. Also Germany and Italy is very easy to reach from Vienna.
Employer
Employer
I was working at the TU Vienna.
Work description
My task was to prepare membranes for gas separation. All material was present and the collegues helped me with the preparation. The prepared membranes were measured in the end and calculation of permeabilities of different gases as well as selectivities were performed. Furthermore, I was doing some measurements of the student's lab of process engineering (adsorption, gas separation, particle technology).
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
I received enough money for paying the rent, the public transport, food, evening activities and travelling.
Language requirements
All employees speak a good level of English and of course German.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
I lived in an accommodation hall. I had my private room with own toilet. There was one kitchen for each floor available. Due to renovation of the whole accommodation hall no plates, cutleries, etc. were present. The room costs 350 Eur per month and you had to pay a deposit of 350 Eur. After leaving the room the accommodation hall will keep 60 Eur of the 350 Eur for cleaning purpose of the room.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
I arrived by bus in Vienna. An IAESTE member picked me up. The member brought me to work and gave me the keys of the dormitory and explained me everything about the dormitory. However, I should go on my own to the dormitory. But it was not so difficult to find.
Meeting other foreign students
It exists a facebook group, where all international students wrote when they wanted to go somewhere. We met mostly in the city or went to a park or the Danube Island for playing football or volley ball. On the weekend there are some organised weekends of other local committees in Austria(e.g. LC Graz, LC Linz...) as well as abroad (LC Munich, LC Budapest...).
Sport and culture
In summer there is a film festival. At different places in Vienna you can watch different movies. In the end of June there is the Danube Island Festival. The opera is closed during the summer as far as I know.
If you like doing sport, there are a lot of parks. The best is to go to the danube island. You can go inline skating, swimming in the river or running.

Food, local specialties
There are a lot of good restaurants in Vienna. I can recommend 7Stern (http://www.7stern.at/speisen.html). What you should try for sure: Wiener Schnitzel, Sacher Torte, Käsenockerl, Pasta mit Eierschwammerl, Marillen and Apfelstrudel.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
I could communicate via email or phone.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Benefits of the internship
The benefit of an internship is, that you get to know other people in the field of your studies. You get work experience and also experience in speaking another language. Furthermore, in my group on IAESTE trainee obtained in the end the offer to stay for the PhD.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
After I got accepted, IAESTE Austria/Vienna was contacting me as well as IAESTE CZ. I received the most imporatant information. Also in Vienna they helped us where they could.
Overall experience with IAESTE
I had a good time in Vienna. The internship was great. IAESTE is a very good organisation and the offers of the internship are very interesting. The procedure of getting the internship is not difficult. IAESTE helps you wherever they can.
