About the country

Location of the place

Leoben is a smaller city, which is really calm in the summer. Because it´s mostly a university city, few students are here in summer. On behalf of weather, for me it was great, because the temperatures here are never higher than 30°C, average is 24°C. Whole area is really nice, there´s lot of parks and many possibilities for sports.

City

Leoben, small city with very nice people. I really enjoyed my stay here, because everyone was kind to me from the beginning, even when I was trying to speak german and I wasn´t really good at it..
There´s great place for ice-cream near the place called "Mushroom tower", the icon of Leoben. And if you come here, don´t forget to get lunch in das Peter Tunner, a great place, which every day has a special soup, you can also get some salad from the bar.. And the prices are below expected!

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

We went to Graz, which was really nice.. But the best trip was with my internship friends to lake Leopoldsteinersee. It was really close by car (aprox. 45 min by car) and it´s a really must-see place :)

Employer

Employer

I worked for a university department for polymer processing. All of the employees were really kind and helpful and I had no problems with the employer.

Work description

The work offer was written in a really general way.. There was basically just information about the type of work I should do (polymer extrusion).. All in all, I did many things together. I started with some rheometric measurements, then I did some 3D printing and finally I worked on my project based on the pressure anisotropy of polymers.. It was fun working on variety of things.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

I got around 1900Euro netto, which was totally sufficient for accommodation and also everyday food.

Language requirements

Most of the employees were speaking English, but it was good to be able to speak German as well. For me, it was great to practice german at work.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I paid around 280Euro for accommodation, which, for the comfort provided, was totally worth it. The accommodation was clean, the kitchen was big and the other students were totally awesome!

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I´ve met 2 IAESTE coordinators during my stay in Leoben. We went to the swimming pool, for an ice cream and we also went for a walk around the city. We enjoyed it together and had a lot of fun. :)

Meeting other foreign students

I´ve made many new friends, mostly around my accommodation. I´ve met people from all around the world and we are still in contact.

Sport and culture

I´ve done many sports activities. There is a running trail all around Leoben, which I used a lot during my stay here. If you´re not into running, there is a swimming/wellness area, or, if you are into climbing, there is a bouldering center. There is just something for everyone.

Food, local specialties

I think as a Slovak, I knew Austrian cuisine quiet well. I wasn´t surprised by anything special.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

I mostly used WhatsApp and other internet-based communication channels. All of them worked quite well.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

What not to forget with you

Definitely take some running shoes with you. At least you will have a nice activity to clean your mind.

Benefits of the internship

I practiced my German skills a lot and I have learned lots of new experiences about the polymer processing.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

10/10

Overall experience with IAESTE

I was totally satisfied and I would go for another internship with IAESTE anytime.
