ročník 5About the country
Location of the place
My internship was in Munich, which is the third largest city in Germany.
City
In my opinion, Munich is a very beautiful city with a historic city center. However, the best part is that its very close the Alps and the easy access to other interesting destinations. The city also has a pretty good public transportation system. In general, the transportation system in Germany is at a high level. I was also fortunate to buy a 50 Euro ticket, which made traveling even more affordable.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Thanks to the low prices and availability of Flixbus, as well as the 50 Euro ticket, I visited Salzburg, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Neuschwanstein Castle, French Strasbourg, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Italian Milan.
Employer
Employer
I worked in a research group at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Even though the building was not located in the main university campus, its accessibility was excellent, and the technical equipment of the laboratory was of a high standard.
Work description
I worked in an analytical laboratory that focused on construction materials. During my internship, I was assigned a project to work on. I have to say that it made my internship more interesting for me.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
My finances barely covered the cost of living. They just about covered accommodation and food expenses. This amount was insufficient for anything else, so I anticipated having to dip into my savings.
Language requirements
English was required, and my English skills are approximately at a B2 level, which was absolutely sufficient for me. German would have been better, but my German speaking ability is relatively poor. However, in general, Germans speak English well, so it wasn't a problem.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
IAESTE arranged accommodation for me in an apartment that was about a 20-minute walk from my workplace. The rent was 500 Euros, but I received around 130 Euros of financial assistance from DAAD. It was a nice, modernly furnished apartment where I had my own room, and I had one more roommate in the apartment.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
The local IAESTE organization was excellent. They helped me with all my questions. A girl picked me up at the train station upon my arrival and accompanied me to the apartment. Regular IAESTE meetings were also organized once a week.
Meeting other foreign students
The other IAESTE students lived on the other side of the city, so I was a bit isolated. But we would meet at IAESTE events.
Sport and culture
Munich offers a rich range of sports and cultural activities. During the summer, there were, for example, many concerts.
Food, local specialties
German cuisine is quite similar to Czech cuisine, and beer is also consumed in large quantities here.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Communication was absolutely straightforward: phone, internet...everything just like at home.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Don't forget to bring some equipment for the mountains... the Alps are very close by.
What not to forget with you
Good mood and the courage to leave your comfort zone... it's worth it.
Benefits of the internship
Improving your English and gaining new experiences in the laboratory. But also getting to know great people from all over the world.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
Absolutelly with no problem :)
Overall experience with IAESTE
I highly recommend it to everyone.
