Bc. Zuzana Palusova, UCT Prague,
ročník 4About the country
Location of the place
Bayreuth is a small town that has a beautiful historic centre, lots of green space, nice parks, a great open swimming pool and you can cycle everywhere.
City
Bayreuth - a small town, I enjoyed it, I felt calm and safe there. I visited the swimming pool, the fitness centre, the parks and the Eremitage nearby.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
I explored nearby places and I went also to Regensburg, Munich, Berlin, Neuschwanstein Castle, Partnachklamm, and Franconian Switzerland.
Employer
Employer
My employer was the University of Bayreuth, specifically the Laboratory of Crystallography. It was a small team of people and I had a good time working there.
Work description
Everything was great, just the job offer was pretty generic and short text that didn't say anything specific, so I didn't get information about my project until on the spot.
Internship Scope: During my internship at the University of Bayreuth´s Crystallography Laboratory, I gained valuable insights into X-ray structural analysis over a period of nine weeks.
Training and Basics: The initial two weeks were dedicated to intensive training, where I acquired fundamental knowledge in crystallography and X-ray structural analysis. This training included hands-on experience in manipulating crystals and operating optical microscopes and diffractometers.
Data Processing: Following the training, I processed data obtained from various crystals using software tools like CrysAlisPro and JANA2020. The focus was on achieving minimal R-values and standard deviations, requiring meticulous analysis of crystal structures and adjustments of different parameters.
Challenges and Complex Samples: I encountered challenges while working with delicate and complex crystal samples, requiring careful handling and analysis. These samples demanded precision and patience in experimentation.
Documentation: All my findings, methodologies, and reflections were documented in reports, contributing to the ongoing research conducted at the Crystallography Laboratory at the University of Bayreuth.
Overall, this internship has given me a deeper understanding of crystallography and X-ray structural analysis and has allowed me to develop practical skills and abilities in this field. I have also developed the ability to learn new things in a short space of time that I had not previously studied and apply them in a real research setting, which I consider to be a significant asset for my future career.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
I got 934 EUR/month, it was sufficient, but you need your own money for the first month and if you want to travel, you need extra money saved.
Language requirements
You could only speak German in the canteen and dormitory, but at the university, everyone spoke to each other in English, so I never felt left out.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
Accommodation was provided by the university/local IAESTE. I paid 360 EUR/month (+ deposit was required at the beginning). Other interns lived a little further away.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
I was well informed, happy with everything, my buddy picked me up on arrival and her friend took my heavy suitcases to my accommodation, I was given a bicycle, my buddy went with me to the workplace on the first day and there were plenty of social activities to choose from. My sending committee was also very helpful - I could always turn to them with any question.
I went on a trip with IAESTE members to Franconian Switzerland, toured the catacombs in Bayreuth, and we had a barbecue together. There were also more events organized, but I didn't have time for all of them.

Meeting other foreign students
It was very nice to get to know students from other countries and learn about them and their culture.
Sport and culture
I did sports at the fitness centre in Bayreuth and sometimes I went swimming at the swimming pool. For culture I went to other German cities, but there is a nice place in the Bayreuth area - Eremitage.
Food, local specialties
I tried a typical Franconian dish and I rather liked it. I also used to buy typical German stuffed pastry bags in Lidl. Also the kebab in Germany is much better than here.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Yes it is possible to use any social network to communicate.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Buy Deutschland-Ticket, travel a lot, if possible and socialize :).
What not to forget with you
Money for the first month.
Benefits of the internship
good work, own desk, nice colleagues, nice living, quiet green city, you can get everywhere by bike
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
I was well informed, happy with everything, my buddy picked me up on arrival and her friend took my heavy suitcases to my accommodation, I was given a bicycle, my buddy went with me to the workplace on the first day and there were plenty of social activities to choose from.
Overall experience with IAESTE
Very good. I always had someone to turn to.
