About the country

Location of the place

The city Ibagué is the capital of departament Tolima. The landscape there is mountious with many routes for hikes and trips and a lot of waterfalls.

City

Ibagué, well known also as a city of music. In the city center is really nice to visit Parque de la Musica, Plaza de Bolívar or Múseo Panoptico, where is the main historic of the area.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Around Ibagué is many places, which you can visit only for one day. For example: area Juntas, waterfalls Payande, downtown of Ibagué. If you want to do a trips for more than one day, weekend or a week, you can visit ohter cities. For example: Termales in Santa Rosa de Cabel, Parque del Café near by Armenia, Valle del Cocora, Medellín and Guatape, Pacific and whales whatching.

Employer

Néstor Luis Guerrero Chavez, very good profesor. Working with him was so nice and clear.

Work description

My actualy work at the universty was totaly diferent than in the o-form, also the city was diferent.
My main work was about setting a numerical simulation according to laboratory tests for the auxetic model.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

The salary was insufficient to cover basic needs, accommodation and food.

Language requirements

English was enogh at the university. In others places in Colombia you have to know spanish.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

The price of accommodation was okey. The accommodation has been provided by local IAESTE. Some of other students lived in the same area, it was pretty nice.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

We had a few meeting with IAESTE members and university management. In Colombia they don´t have any summer recepcions, so we had to do some by ourselfs.

Meeting other foreign students

We did some trips together. As a trip to Medellín or Buenaventura - Pacific. Also we got out for dinners or went to a cinema.

Sport and culture

The university promised brochures for the school's sports field, but did not deliver the brochures during the entire stay. So I went climbing by myself or with other profesors.

Food, local specialties

I tried some tipical tolima dishes, but it is so fatty. So I prefered to eat more local fruits: papaya, gulupas, ananas, granadilla, pythaya, avocado, bananas...

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

For communicate with Czech Republic I used a letters in bottel or smoke signals.
OMG no! We are in 21st century, of course I used normaly internet, Messenger or Whatsapp.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

It´s really beautiful uni with so nice profs. You can meet there a lot of local people and proofe your spanish skills.

Benefits of the internship

Get better in my english and spanish. I was begginer in spanish, but now I can normaly talk in spanish :)

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

When I was already on my way to Colombia, IAESTE members from the Czech Republic scared me that if I didn't speak Spanish, they would definitely rob me right away. Thanks, that's really not good info for someone going there right now.
