Monika Pšenáková, UCT Prague,
ročník 4About the country
Location of the place
Osijek is a small town with a cozy atmosphere in the east of Croatia. The Drava river flows here, which is one of the main attractions. You can ride a bike or walk along the river, swim in the Drava river or have a coffee or lunch in the restaurants on the river bank.
City
Osijek, the fourth-largest city in Croatia, is located near the borders with Serbia and Hungary, approx. 4 hours east of Zagreb.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Osijek is located in the Slavonia region. It has its own historic city center, which is worth visiting. Along the river there are many opportunities for sports. Kopika is a beach area near the river with bars and pools. There are many cycling routes around Osijek and other cities in the area, so you can definitely ride a bike not only for commuting.
Employer
Employer
Faculty of Food Technology, University of Osijek. People at faculty were really nice and it was a pleasure for me to work with them.
Work description
I worked at the department of food and nutrition. During my internship, I mainly worked at the analysis of honeys and bee products, which are very widespread in Croatia. I got a better overview in problematics of bee products, their analysis and production. I also gained experience in the field of oil technology and their processing.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
700€, wasn't sufficient for local conditions (transport, accommodation, living).
Language requirements
The staff and other people at the university speak English. There was no problem to communicate. It was a little different with people in Osijek in general (shops, restaurants, bank, hospital, tax office, etc.), most of them do not speak English.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
Accommodation was provided by IAESTE. It was a Christian institution. The price was €265/month. It was clean, each room has its own bathroom. The kitchen was shared by all students on one floor.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
IAESTE is a great organization that definitely makes it easier for students to organize an internship. My IAESTE contact person was very helpful. At the beginning of the internship, he helped me with the tax office, bank account, etc. There were also some meetings with local IAESTE community.
Meeting other foreign students
When I was in Osijek, it was summer vacation, so I didn't meet many other students.
Sport and culture
In Osijek, the most used mode of transport is a bicycle. There are many opportunities for sports activities. They have many sports fields, such as an outdoor swimming pool, athletic tracks or football fields. You can also swim in Drava and enjoy the beach nearby this river. There are also possibilities for trips to nearby towns or to Hungary.
Food, local specialties
There are many bakeries in Osijek with typical pastries.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Social medias, phone calls.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
A small, cozy town with beautiful surroundings around the Drava River. You can move around the city by bicycle. In the area, there are opportunities to get to know a bit of a different Croatia than we know it from summer vacations by the sea.
What not to forget with you
Mosquito repellent and bike.
Benefits of the internship
You will meet many new and inspiring people. You will go out of his comfort zone, which will move you further in life. Internship gave me the opportunity to meet experts in the field of food science.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
Good.
Overall experience with IAESTE
Good.
