Bc. Františka Horáčková, UCT Prague,
ročník 4About the country
Location of the place
Osijek is the fourth largest city in Croatia. Thanks to the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University, Osijek can be considered as a student town. Anyway, the city itself seems small.
City
You can go on really nice walks around the Drava River. You can aslo visit baroque fortress Tvrđa or Zoo Vrt Osijek. You can get everywhere on foot or by bike, which can be rented here cheaply.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Region Baranja, National Park Kopački Rit, the city of Vukovar.
Employer
Employer
I worked for University of Osijek at the Department of Chemistry. My mentor was really helpful and kind.
Work description
My work corresponded to the description in the internship offer. I participated in the measurements of peptides by microarray electrophoresis and I also worked on the synthesis of chiral sorbents for enantiomeric separation. In the first two days I was trained and the remaining weeks I worked alone under the supervision of my mentor. I usually spent 6 to 7 hours a day in the laboratory.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
I have earned 4080 HRK (600 EUR). The salary wasn't completely sufficient for all my costs but I didn't go there to earn money.
Language requirements
My English level is B2 and I understood everything without any problems. Not every employee could speak English but my mentor could speak English well.
There are a lot of people, especially the old ones, in Osijek who do not speak or understand English, so it was sometimes funny in restaurants or shops, because we had to communicate in Czech-Croatian-English mix. But there are a lot of similarities in Croatian and Czech language, so it wasn't that hard.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)
The accommodation was provided by IAESTE Croatia. I stayed at the Evangelistic dorm and it cost me 2000 HRK (265,45 EUR) per month. The dormitory is new and modern. The room has a bed, a desk, a chair, a wardrobe, an air conditioning and central heating. Most rooms have a private bathroom. Bedding is available. Breakfast, lunch and dinner available for an additional fee. There are several shared kitchens and one shared living room. The kitchens are fully equipped (dishes, two induction hotplates, an oven, a microwave, a fridge). The entire dormitory has the option of connecting to the eduroam network or the dormitory Wi-Fi network.
The other interns lived in the same dormitory.

Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
Local IAESTE group organized a few events. However, most of my trips were taken by myself.
Meeting other foreign students
I have met a lot of German students at the dorm otherwise there were nobody due to the exam season there in September.
Sport and culture
I didn't do any sports here I was just going for walks but you can rent a bike there.
I went to the Fisherman's day in Baranja where I could take a look at traditional crafts and customs in this region.

Food, local specialties
I really like Croatian bakeries with tasty pastry like for example Burek. I also tried specially baked carp at the Fisherman's day in Baranja.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
