About the country

Location of the place

The internship took place in Amman, capital city of Jordan. Very highly populated city with a lot of things to do. As it is Middle-East country, there are several cultural changes that you will see in daily life. One of them is constant praying everywhere and woman in hijabs.

City

Amman is overcrowded, its definitely the biggest city in Jordan. Be aware that transportation in Amman is crazy. You will hear horns all day long and see no rules on the roads. But surprisingly normal buses are working good and there is a well made system (Amman Bus App) with not bad arrival accuracy.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

There is a lot of things to do during your free time in Amman, we were traveling around and visiting historical sites. There are not normal european pubs and just some special places where you can get very expensive alcohol.

Employer

Employer

I was working in the Civil Engineering department of University of Jordan. They were building faculty for dentists on the university ground at that time.

Work description

The week in Jordan starts from sunday and ends on thursday. The offer was arranged for 8 hours per day but in the end its basicly on your will and motivation how much do you want to learn and when do you want to leave your work. You have a free time management there and you can choose if you want to learn about structure design in the software or if you want to be on the site and see real construction. The internship itself was more like an observing of things than actually doing something but thanks to fact, that it was in Middle-east country, It felt enough just to walk around the site with supervisors and see whats going on there.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

The payment was fair, but not enough for normal living. If you are going to eat outside and travel a lot it wont be enough to cover your costs.

Language requirements

The only problem that I would like to mention was the language gap. Most of the people on the site could not speak english enough to explain construction process nor the details about the structures itself. Luckily there were other Arabic interns who could translate to me so it was not such a problem. The work was easy and fun, not demanding a lot of time and easy to follow.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Accommodation was provided by IAESTE and it was just perfect. I was living in the Istanbul Hotel Suits in Amman with a very friendly and fun guy from Norway. The apartment was much better then I expected - clean, big enough, well equipped - and the staff was incredible. Those guys were there for you anytime. You could chill-out with them at the reception, play a football with them, go to restaurant etc. They made the living much more enjoyable!

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Pick-up from and to the airport was well organized, without any problems at all. Overal I had a lot of fun with IAESTE members and I was able to get to know the Arabic culture very well thanks to them. Jordan is country with a lot of thing to offer and IAESTE will help you to see as much as you can. They made for us a 3-day trip to Wadi Rum, Aquaba and Petra. I have to admit that I was very impresed how awesome the trip was and I have tons of great memories from that trip.

Meeting other foreign students

Moments with new friends from all around the world are one of the best memories you will bring back from your internship. I met a lot of arabic people who completely changed my view on middle-east countries and now I can consider them as a true friends. And I do have a lot of invitations for free staying in a few exotic countries. Friendship was strong part of the internship.

Sport and culture

We were playing football with guys from the hotel and were visiting local restaurants, trying new food etc. And we went also canyoning somwhere in Jordan.

Food, local specialties

They eat a lot of shawarma and theres a lot of fast-foods everywhere. I would rather suggest to go somewhere downtown to eat hummus and falafel. Those fast-foods gets really annoying after while. But hummus and falafel taste really good there and its not expensive at all.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

I bought SIM card with 40GB and just video-call all the time. There is no problem with connection in Amman.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

If you want to drink alcohol its even worth it to buy it at the airport before your flight.

What not to forget with you

Long sleeves, hat, sun cream, sunglasses.

Benefits of the internship

New friends from different cultures, you will get to see how it works on the working site and you will visit one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Members of IAESTE Jordan were very friendly and helpful. Especially Mohammed with Layan, that I am very grateful for. Altough IAESTE Jordan itself was sometimes a bit slow in giving certain informations, I could always rely on those two and the time I was pleased to spend with them was always smooth and pleasant.
