Michaela Zdražilová, CTU Prague,
ročník 3About the country
Location of the place
Vienna is the capital city of Austria and it is located close to the Czech, Hungarian and Slovakian borders.
City
Vienna is a big and beautiful city with many museums, monuments and palaces. There is always something going on, like exhibitions, festivals or concerts.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
I took my bike to Vienna, so I made a lot of bike trips - Baden, Wiener Neustadt, Lobau. I also visited Linz and Salzburg, as they are easily reachable by train.
Employer
Employer
I worked at Ziviltechnikerbüro Dipl-Ing Josef Schelmberger Ingenieurkonsulent für Bauwesen. It is a small structural engineering company (around 15 employees in total) located close to Prater.
Work description
I calculated electricity towers using RSTAB software. There was some previous experience required. However, the colleagues were happy to help me with whatever I did not know.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
I got 1600 euros/month (including taxes) and it was enough.
Language requirements
I speak no German and it was not a problem at all. Everybody spoke English at work and software I used could be switched to English. In small cafes or shops, sometimes they did not speak English but we made it work with our hands :)
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
I rented an apartament on my own - in comparison with student dorms it made more sense economically. I stayed in a one bedroom apartment and paid 700 eur/month including internet and utilities.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
There were some organised events and trips but I did not participate.
Meeting other foreign students
I didn't meet any other trainees, I spent time mostly with my colleagues or friends who already live in Vienna for a while.
Sport and culture
There were several music and film festivals during the summer. Also, there are few beaches ad other sport facilities at Donauinsel.
Food, local specialties
Eismarillenknödel from eissalon TICHY is a must try.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Austria is in the EU, so everything works the same way as in the Czech Republic.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Vienna is a very bike friendly city, so I would recommend to either bring your own or rent a bike. I was able to get on bike everywhere, there was no problem with parking as there are bike holders on every corner and I did not need to use the public trasport at all.
What not to forget with you
Umbrella? ;)
Benefits of the internship
Opportunity to spend a relatively longer period abroad.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
Communication was very smooth, responses to my questions (mostly paperwork related) were very quick. Everyone was very helpful.
Overall experience with IAESTE
Without a problem.
