About the country

Location of the place

Portugal

City

Lisbon

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Portugal, especially Lisbon is a perfect place for an intenship! The city itself has a lot to offer - wander in parts like Alfama, Chiado, walk the Avenida Liberdade. Lisabon has unique atmosphere and I enjoyed every single walk anywhere. Then Belém with all the discovery sights - I recommend getting there by bolt scooter. Coast with nice beaches on the way to Cascais or Caparica (Surfing). Cascais is a nice town to visit too. And then Sintra of course - National Park with several palaces, beautiful gardens, Cabo da Roca and Praia de Guincho... The whole surrounding of Lisbon is included in metropolitana metro card, so definitely charge that one! This was only what come to my mind in Lisbon area, but there is lot more in Portugal. I visited Nazaré, Ericeira, Fatima, Setubal, Porto and Azores Islands (Sao Miguel), unfortunately I didnt make Algarve, which is a place for swimming in the summer.

Work description

I was an assistant of a zootechnician. I worked in a reasearch group at Faculty of Agriculture. They conduct animal trials in order to find out, how usage of algae in feedstuffes effects animal performance and meat quality. I helped mailny with feed preparation and animal care - feeding and cleaning. I also analysed mineral content of meat samples.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

750€/month - yes. The prices in Portugal are very similar to the Czech ones. Expenses for a month: Accommodation was 350€, metro card 40€, food around 150€ (I cooked a lot). Other expenses - flight tickets, deposits, restaurants, clubbing/alcohol, traveling and some casualties for the beggining - metro single tickets, room equipmetnt...

Language requirements

B2 (excellent). In Lisbon, almost every young or educated person speaks fluent English

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

350€/month for a room in a shared flat. It was not provided by IAESTE, I had to arrange it myself. Iaeste Portugal only sent me list with websides where I could find accommodation.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Nothing. They normally organize a weekend event but it was canceled due to covid. They created a FB group, so we could arrange our own hang outs, so we did.

Meeting other foreign students

Lisbon is full of them. I recommend buying ESN card (15€), joining their events and meeting Erasmus studnets. I also met great people in my flat, we went to the trips and dinners together.

Sport and culture

Lisbon and Portugal is great place to try surfing. I also did yoga in a park with my friends. I went running a few times and walked a lot in the city. Gyms are available like in Czechia. I think, there was opportunity to do any sport a person would like to.
Regarding culture, I visited a few museums, as they are free in the first sunday of a month for citizens (temporary is OK too). Listnening to fado music in bars is also a nice experience.

Food, local specialties

Food in groceries and meals in general in Portugal are quite similar to Czech ones, so there is no shock. They eat a lot of fish - cod fish (bacalhau) is very popular. Then, they have plenty of various pastry in cafes calle Pastelaria, which is a small café where the sell coffee and sweet cakes. The best and most usual one Pastel de Nata - try it in Belém.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

by internet, EU roaming.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Lisbon is a perfect city for an internship or study stay. One of the challenges is accommodation, arrange it definitely at least one month in advance (start looking even earlier), so it is in a good location for you and some reasonable price. Join FB groups for students in Lisbon (Erasmus) and than join ESN or ELL and meet some people in your first days, so you have a group of friends to go on trips, surfing or hanging out in the city. My biggest mistake: I bought only municipal ticket the first month :D go for metropolitan right away. Students always struggle with metro card, just prepare to wait a few hours in a line.

What not to forget with you

You can buy anything there of course. I couldn´t find only one special spices, that we use in Slovakia almost in every meal, so maybe small amount of that. Also dont forget about basic medicine, so you don´t have to buy whole package in case of an illness. Sllipers, umbrella. Ask your landlord if he provides bed linens.

Benefits of the internship

I got to know Lisbon and Portugal, the country and culture, new way of living. It was a great life experience for me, I dealed with new situations on my own and I got confidence in my abilities. I found out more about me, how I like to spend me free time and I opened my mind for new kinds of people. In work, I learned a lot of new things, it was a great work experience, even when it was out of my field of study.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

IAESTE Portugal - They do a great job regarding administration, information and arranging the internships. I was an awfull trainee for them, always late with every documentation, but they stayed super polite and supporting. The only thing that I missed was some social events, or any activity to meet other trainees.

Overall experience with IAESTE

I am a member so cant complain :D As I said, I did everything late, but it still worked out, so thank you IAESTE
